If I was a neutral then I would say that it was a fair result & reflected the difference between the two sides. If southend hadn't eased off in the second half then the defeat would probably have been heavier.
Agree with most that's been said already but...
There's no way that the crowd was 2200+, I would guess that it was in the 1700-1800 range. Lots of revenue forfeited by the club from potential gate money & catering.
I had expected Hadler to be in the starting lineup. Mersin doesn't inspire confidence, he was lucky when their player missed that open goal as he had started to come for the ball & would just have got there first but inexplicably backed off. As for his kicking! Also he doesn't seem to communicate with his team mates, the Southend goalie was exactly the opposite.
We played 3-5-2 which I have suggested in previous posts. Mensah & Greenidge played OK but maybe not much of an improvement on what we already had. A back-three of those two plus Ellul would perhaps have been better as Hoyte seems past his best regrettably.
Corne seems to be out of form & would probably benefit from a rest from playing for a couple of games. As for Barkers he should be sent back to wherever he came from and Odusanya selected in his place.
Up front seems to be a big problem with the exception of Barham. Alabi is a huge disappointment & Pattisson showed that he is great as an impact sub but that's all.
A lot of work to do if we want to avoid being in the NLS next season.

At half time last night, I thought I'd have a quick look to see who was in their squad and what their careers looked like. Pretty much all non-league players with minimal, if any league experience: Andeng Ndi - Southend Academy Bridge - Bromley Fonguck - Barnet Hobson - Weymouth Husin - Dartford Kensdale - Colchester Lopata - Sheffield United (1 game, youth player in Poland beforehand) Cavanagh - Eastleigh Powell - Kettering Scott-Morris - Hemel Hempstead Wreh - Banbury So that's 1 academy player, 2 from league 2, 3 from National and 5 from the leagues below. Where are we going wrong? Our recruitment seems shocking comparatively if they can take 5 players from leagues below and make them into a team that good. Well done for that bit of detective work - but just how depressing is that? My only consolation, sitting watching that shite last night, was my assumption that we were up against a side that had kept most of their L2 players. But it turns out that they had built a team from the same pool of players as us. OK, so they've got more money than us (ignoring their debt problems!), but even so it really demonstrates how poor our retention and updating choices have been. Having started off not breing impressed with Hak, I gave him the benefit of the doubt last season (deservedly), but I'm afraid we seem to be back to the old Hak. He built this side, he has to take responsibility.

A few observations.
From my angle their first was an own goal. Going about a yard wide before the deflection.
Second goal, piss poor defending. How could he come inside so easily.
Third goal, again really poor defending. We had so many chances to clear our lines but it kept coming back into the box
Midfield pretty much overrun for the whole game. Corne looks knackered, Booty frustrated, and as for Barkers, we'd have probably been better playing with 10.
I thought Deacon and Galvin were the only ones who looked NL standard and Mensah did ok, but Greenwich was poor.
I hope Barham comes good but he seems to be struggling at the moment and even in the second half when we got some decent balls into the box his poacher's instinct seems to have deserted him.
I'm glad someone said we played 3-5-2 because I couldn't discern any real shape and the tactics (if such they can be called) seemed to be just hoof it into the channels and hope.
One or two people have questioned the effort and commitment. I don't agree, they never stopped trying but the quality just wasn't there, and hard work on its own just isn't enough.

Interesting this as I was only discussing last night where had they managed to unearth these players bearing in mind their financial situation

And this is the comparion with Jay's first season. A picture is worth a thousand words (or, in this case, quite a few points):

We got one of the NS's more promising players in Sol, but he's obviously been injured pretty much since joining. I can't believe we weren't scouting the players in the NS last season, as we got Sol - so are we so cash strapped the top 10 - 20% of players in the South are unobtainable to us?

Could Southend's signings be, at least in part, down to their Head of Football, John Still?

Attended last night and was obviously pleased with the Southend performance. Your side are not the worst we have played this season. Torquay and scunthorpe were far worse and Torquay beat us somehow in a smash and grab.
Quite a tidy little ground and a decent away day.
I'm not sure why they have a load of chavvy youth right next to the away fans as it was a recipe for our own chavvy youth to have a go. As for the stewards just trying to randomly pull people out, it was never going to end well.
I honestly thought your players kept going right until the very end. And were a credit to you.
We are starting to build a really good side. We have the best defence in the league and but for the wood work, you would have breached it.
I'm sure you will pick up points against those in and around the bottom of the table.
We had arguably a weaker side out last night due to several key injuries but felt that we always looked in control and scored some good goals at good times.
All the best for the season and hope to see you all at roots hall backing your team.

Just as an aside, no question you have been one of the best sides we have played. Look nailed on for the play-offs. Very well supported too. The lay-out of the ground means segregation is a pain in the neck. Doesn work great. Its a necessary must for the 'big matches' sadly.
