I had a snuggle with Clan Line a few years ago at Victoria. I'd upload the photo as my avatar if I knew how!
Oh, I do! And it only took me half an hour....

It would be great to do, but £316 is a lot of money to end up back where you started (Victoria). You do get to see some exotic places on route though, not just Maidstone, there's Faversham and Margate too!

Indeed. Much cheaper to stand by the line and watch it go by, plus you don't see much of the engine when you are sitting in the carriages behind it.

Just about the worst place to see a steam engine charging down the track is on the train behind it! It's ages since I saw a steam hauled train on the ME line, so I'm looking forward to this. Especially as it's a Bulleid - my favourite engines, especially the re-built Merchant Navy class, beautiful machines, the ideal combination of form and function. I used to watch them thundering through our local station when I was a kid - an experience that was thrilling and terrifying in equal parts, and one (unfortunately) no one is ever going to experience again. But, if it's coming through at 5, this might be the first ever game where I leave early!

Is this such an unusual event?
Caught sight of a steam engine, pulling carriages, crossing the A20 at Allington about 1030 on a midweek morning earlier this month. assumed that was some version of the Orient Express service from Victoria.

Apparently due to engineering works elsewhere?

They don't tend to use the ME line much these days, I've no idea why. I'm actually struggling to remember when I last saw steam on that line, I can remember a team hauled shuttle service between Paddock Wood and MW about 17 or 18 years ago (part of some sort of festival or something?). The guy who used to work at Lenham station until a few years ago used to put up a notice of any steam hauled specials in the area, but even then I don't remember any going through Maidstone. Seen a few at Canterbury West over the years, so they must come up from Ashford, but maybe they use the Weald line from London Bridge/Tonbridge - straighter and flatter than the ME line, and perhaps with more capacity/passing loops/etc?

That's more like it, I started this discussion for the cheesy puns. If only we had been playing Orient today, the possibilities would have been endless.
