Thanks Bernie. But it would be a lot less confusing if you just posted this on a new thread, rather than digging one up from FIVE years ago! Anyone interested in this, but as confused as I was by the link - it appears to indicate that a special train (presumably steam hauled?) Is coming through Maidstone East about 10:20 on Saturday morning. That's right. More details here...

Often wonder at the prices of these trips. Doesn't matter what engine is up front, as you can't see it. £160 for a train ride that allows you to bring your own sandwiches? Find a good spot on the lineside and watch it go by for free! Best places are always where the train is going uphill, or making a standing start That way you get the best noise and smoke effects.

Is 10.20 an accurate time ? I assume it will be passing through bearsted so I'd lovbe to take my children down to see it.

Rebuilt Bullied West Country class, if I'm not mistaken - the express engines of my childhood. Beautiful machines.
Got up too late to go down to ME after a bad night - but just in time to hear it go past, and see the smoke and steam at the bottom of our garden!
With a class 47 banker too - not taking any chances on the Bearted incline!

Seals are far from unknown on the Medway, while kingfishers are surprisingly common. Have seen the latter in the centre of Maidstone before, including on the Len near the old Peugeot dealers. The stretch from Teston to Wateringbury is good, while first year birds can be seen on the tidal stretches down to Rochester in the winter. Manor Park in West Malling usually has a few. The main problem is spotting them, for despite the bright colours they are only starling size and like to perch on low branches overhanging water. They fly fast, low and straight, often with a high piping call. Not sure what this has to do with football, but sometimes you need a diversion!
