Seals are far from unknown on the Medway, while kingfishers are surprisingly common. Have seen the latter in the centre of Maidstone before, including on the Len near the old Peugeot dealers. The stretch from Teston to Wateringbury is good, while first year birds can be seen on the tidal stretches down to Rochester in the winter. Manor Park in West Malling usually has a few. The main problem is spotting them, for despite the bright colours they are only starling size and like to perch on low branches overhanging water. They fly fast, low and straight, often with a high piping call. Not sure what this has to do with football, but sometimes you need a diversion! Cheers. I didn't know we got seals in the medway. Surprised they can avoid the shopping trolleys etc. It is a nice diversion. It has nothing to do with football.

Last year, or possibly the year before, one got up past Allington Lock and spent most of the summer between Maidstone and Allington. Most commonly seen at Allington near the Malta or in Maidstone opposite the Archbishops Palace.

A steam hauled train came through Maidstone just after 11am on Saturday - none for ages and then two come along just weeks apart!
I had no idea one was due, I just happened to be looking out over the garden when I heard the whistle and saw the puffs of steam as it went by. Didn't even have time to get down to the bottom of the garden and actually see it!
Oddly, both my wife and daughter were on trains to London at that moment (different trains), so the steam engine must have passed both of them and neither noticed it!
