The people on the terraces can string together more than a few words? Judging by our lack of home atmosphere I think you're telling porkies.

Found this whilst 'researching' (ie Googling) Jim Thompson. A little bit of history from our first season back in the town - the transition from the Wilderness Years to the yoof of today. Sad to see quite a few deleted posters (only one of whom I recognised) and several regulars who no longer post - and of course, the much missed Porkystone...

Why do people keep resurrecting ancient threads?

Why do people keep resurrecting ancient threads? "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it" is how the quote goes, and it can apply to just about everything depending upon your viewpoint. For example, I often wonder if social media as we have it today had existed twenty years earlier (other than just chat in the pub as it was) would Peter Ridsdale have been able to mortgage the future of Leeds United the way he did? When it comes to Jim Thompson who in my opinion was very "my way or the highway" as I remember it's worth knowing about so that we can put the methods of subsequent and future owners of the club into context. He led us into the football league, but at what price - to us and Dartford? Just my opinion.

If you have to explain the joke, it was probably rubbish. I posted that as a joke because JDL has previously commented on my fondness for recycling old threads.
Jim Thompson was a disaster who destroyed Maidstone United and stole Dartford’s ground for the sake of a couple of years of glory.

When did this thread start originally?

True but he did save the club in the early seventies and made it just about the top non league club and was shafted by the local council

Thompson was good for the club for a number of years when we’re dubbed “the Man Utd of non league football” but selling the Athletic Ground was his undoing even though we did make it to the Football League for a short but very enjoyable period that then led to extinction.
He was very much a cigar smoking sheepskin coat 1970s caricature. He tried it on with my now sister in law when she was a young girl interviewing for a bar job at the ground. Thankfully she rejected him and the job!
Ancient history now and so completely opposite to Oliver!

There were more likely sites in town, which have long since been lost to housing. But he had blown the MFI money, so gambled and lost.
