As an ex-Paris resident:maybe what we need is a Maidstone Arc de Triomphe, with the Tomb of the Unknown Supporter underneath, and the names of mythical victories (or draws / defeats / penalty shoot-outs) on the walls: CHARLTON - WATFORD - SHEFFIELD UNITED - GILLINGHAM - MILDENHALL - NORTH LEIGH - TONBRIDGE - ABINGDON - NEWPORT IOW - DOVER - RAMSGATE - BENGAL - BECKENHAM - WALTON - SEVENOAKS - FOLKESTONE - HALIFAX - CARDIFF - BLACKPOOL - BROXBOURNE - FLEET - BEDFORD - MARGATE - HASTINGS - PETERBOROUGH - LYDD - HALESOWEN - HARLOW - erm, slade Green... Someone out there will have been to all of those (I'll give myself a 20/29) ; next season or hopefully even this, there will be another epic battle to add to the history. It was depressing but true, until recently, that years came and went without a memorable home game. The epic stories always seemed to come from the away trips (Dartford and Redbridge about the only ones that stick in my mind from Bourne Park) but now Brighton, Dulwich home games and others can be added to the "were you there?" list. Whod'v'e dreamt a trip to Halifax? Next year...?

It was depressing but true, until recently, that years came and went without a memorable home game. The epic stories always seemed to come from the away trips (Dartford and Redbridge about the only ones that stick in my mind from Bourne Park) but now Brighton, Dulwich home games and others can be added to the "were you there?" list. Whod'v'e dreamt a trip to Halifax? Next year...? Ramsgate at home in 2008 was a memorable one. 2-0 down at half-time and ended up winning 3-2. I seem to remember the shed at Bourne Park resembling a mosh pit when our third goal went in. I also remember this being followed by one of the early StonesLive broadcasts from The Fox, and a certain Mr Gooch buying me lots of drinks. It didn't end well. A few other games at Bourne Park that stick out were the 3-2 victory over Tonbridge, the 4-1 over Dartford, the 1,719 crowd for Wimbledon and the atmosphere at the last game of last season against Bognor Regis. Sticking out for more negative reasons, I also remember the Ashford Town (Middlesex) manager trying to punch a fan - he missed and hit his own girlfriend in the face, a Molesey player collapsing like he'd been shot when he was 10 yards from any other player (which led to the invention of a "Jake the sniper" character on the terraces), a Sittingbourne player breaking his leg on Boxing Day 2006 when both he and Lee Shearer went for the ball at the same time, last season's three floodlight failures against Sittingbourne and games against Dover Athletic and Walton Casuals being played on a mudbath in 2006, with the Dover game almost being called off due to another (partial) floodlight failure. Only one game at Ashford sticks out: the 4-2 victory over Aveley, because it was just about the only good game in two seasons playing there. I also remember Danny Hockton being sent off for diving during one game, a decision which still divides a lot of people (it was wrong), and the Benny Hill chase theme being played over the tannoy as the referee left the pitch at full time. This post wasn't meant to be this long. Apparently there were more memorable home games than I thought, but yes, away games were far more memorable. I would argue that they still are, but the difference is not as significant as it once was.

Jim Thompson was a visionary. Because of his foresight to get shot of that decrepit old mess of a athletic ground I was able to buy an iron on my way home from work rather than drive past a rundown ground.

Another epic away victory was Eynsford in the cup when we quickly went 2-0 up only to find ourselves 3-2 down by HT. We then regrouped and ran out 4-3 winners by the end. Phoenix Sports away, when they played a load of ex-Chatham players. We saw them warming up at the start and thought, 'oh dear, we're gonna lose this and bang goes our league title chances'. We won 7-0 and dear old Ernie Munn was moaning at the end because we hadn't won 8-0 and gone top!
Ramsgate away in the cup was a personal classic for me because I ended up on a drinking session with Jonny 'The Beard' Sayer, which saw me end up waking up at 2-30 in the morning down the bottom of the high street and having to get up and go get a hotel (for £80!). The entire cost of the day was £250 and we only drew 1-1. Gawd knows what could have happened if we had won!

Did Trolley miss Newport IOW? What a day out it was. Why did he miss it? "Build me up buttercup..." Forget all of that - I spent part of the coach journey to Newport IOW sitting next to big Jon Parr. How do you top that ?? Thats living with royalty !!

JT did what he said he was going to do, put the Stones into the football league, unfortunately this was to ultimately cost us our existence. Not entirely his fault , but we also took Dartford into the mire with us, which left a lot of bad feeling. Recently when rumours abounded that we might share with Chatham, I was told by a Chats supporter " we don't want you here, look what you did to Dartford" . That was 20 years previous. People have long memories. As for the debate about old and new, I usually stand by the dugups and have had some very good conversations and laughs with plenty of new and returning fans. So I'm not aware of any problems. We are all Stones together, we have a fantastic new ground great new owners and a very promising young manager. The future is very bright.
