What lunatic picks a fight with George? Someone who's no loss to the gene pool.

Well Pedant, I am aware of your name and reputation...however I haven’t been subjected to it before. Firstly, I assume you do it In humour and aren’t really that anal...but to put the record straight from my inaccuracies.... ”the last kick of the game” is generally known as an expression and it was indeed a header that Braintree scored. Secondly, once Braintree had scored we returned the ball to the centre spot...kicked it once and then the referee blew for full time and George decided to do a Cantona into the crowd followed by both teams. I find the Pedant thing funny, unless you actually have asbergers or autism in which case I apologise. Welcome back, NWS

I accept 'last kick of the game' as an expression but you used one of my current linguistic pet hates, used incorrectly mostly, but not exclusively, by the young. "Literally".
An easy target practically begging to be highlighted.

I fear for George here. Our owners seem like the sort that could sack him for this, and maybe with justification.
If this were another team and their player, I think I’d expect a pretty severe punishment.
He is our captain (for now) and should be able to restrain himself.
Hope we can get past this, apologise, and he can continue to lead the club as he had up until last night as I really like that way he acts and represents the club.

Very worrying as the authorities may also take action which would be such a shame as in all other ways George IS Maidstone United this year.

There's no suggestion George struck the fan. The footage is inconclusive and we know nothing about the context. For instance, we don't know what prompted George to confront anyone and it seems very out of character. I'd be really surprised if he loses his job or even the captaincy. If he massively overreacted then he seems the type of person that will acknowledge that and apologise.
If he believes it was a reasonable reaction then the fan did something far worse than mention George's wages as was suggested by one of their fans.

Whatever the cause, players shouldn't leave the pitch and dive in amongst fans and the fact that several Maidstone shirts were on the terraces - albeit to calm things?? - wasn't good at all for the club, and George needs to explain/apologise and be repentant, and the club may have to act internally to try to avoid the FA having to act as well. They said the club would make an announcement, so we have to sit tight and see what that is, and hope that George, and the club, comes out of this OK.

I agree with you unless there are extraordinary mitigating circumstances.

I'm almost certain he didn't strike anyone if he did I'm pretty sure we'd have heard about someone being admitted to the local a' and e'. ( have you seen the size of his forearms ?). I'm not for one minute condoning going into the crowd but from what I know of his character there must have been extreme provocation even taking into account the late goal. Hopefully as it was after the final whistle an apology and a fine either from the club or the FA should suffice.

While not condoning him going into the crowd, it would be unfair and inconsistent for him to be treated any differently to Nathan Ashmore, who as far as I can make out received no sanction for exactly the same thing.

Speculation is all we have at the moment. I’m waiting for an official club statement before passing any judgement. What I’ve seen though of his character I’ll be very surprised if George was winding fans up and “deserved” any bad comments. I’m more concerned currently about sadly letting a winning position slip for the second time in two consecutive league games.
