A pub that's missing off my list, I realised today, is the old Stones Inn. Anyone know if that was 'real' pub, independent of the football club, or just part of the stadium? Never actually heard of this pub unless you mean the cellar bar at the old ground. If this pub did exist then I too would be interested in details.

My memory is shite these days, but I'm sure there was a pub there (pretty sure it was called Stones Inn too). Right at the front, between the main gate and the gym. I never drank in there, so have no idea if it was a proper pub, or just something like the Spitfire Lounge.

Apparently according to my elder sister not only did the pub exist but I used to drink there . Oh what alcohol does to the brain.

Ancient Druids - it's in the list in the top post. I remember someone once telling me there was a pub on corner of King Street and week street!! This pub could have been THE Lamb and I do not think anyone has mentioned the ROSE AND CROWN at the bottom of the high street, now a property legal firm.

Strictly speaking they are looking for a tenant. Before it was Drakes, it was relaunched as an crab and oyster bar (can't remember the name, but it had 'Crab and Oyster' in it!) and was used as the 'base' for a short-lived TV series when TVS took over from Southern. Anyone remember this?

The pub you mean is "the Railway Bell " and was as rough if not rougher than the"VIC" but if you want to know how bad it was then ask Maidstone United legend Dave Matthews who was once landlord of this establishment. I myself used to frequent the place and I put my fair share of punters in hospital but had the shit kicked out of me more times than I care to remember. Horrible place - I never even used to walk near it! It was S&N too, if I remember - I used to wonder why they didn't sort it out. I guess it made money? Funny they knocked it down too - just to make way for... an empty space. I remember going there with mum and step dad early in the evening on river festival day back in the mid 1980s and there was a band playing outside and we were having a drink outside. There was an old bloke dozed off on an old sofa outside, that someone then set light to!

Not if you worked in loder and paynes back in the day, we dreaded all the drunks stumbling up from the river and into the shop in the afternoon!

They had the shop that is now Gallery, didn't they? Had a weird balcony (gallery, presumably!) all round. I was never quite sure what they sold, to be honest, only went in there once. I had a flat by the river in those days (next to where Matalan is now), so it was a really easy walk home - even if you couldn't walk that well... Also a fantastic view of the fireworks when they were on the old gas works site (where that hideous hotel is now). They had the fair there one year instead, so that was a bit of a pain, but it was only one year. Just realised that is already 20 years ago - my recent past has morphed into history!

I used to work on that department where the balcony was, that is where we displayed the furniture and the beds. Downstairs was the carpets, curtains,bedding/linen and bizarrely, ladies underwear department! It was straight out of the 1940s,in fact you had to bring in your own sugar if you took it, obviously a left over of the wartime rationing, 50 years earlier! I was still working there when it closed in sept 1996, 3 weeks before my 21st birthday

I think you'll find that the Rose and Crown was technically a hotel. Similarly the Queen's Head (?) on the opposite side of the High Street that's now a steak restaurant.
