I've heard that the pilot is re-opening in September.. It's been repainted externally in the last few days.

I walked past it almost every day for years, but only drank in it once - once too often. Evil place. Could have been made something of though, given it's location and the historic building. Better than just another post-modern, identikit station foyer. As for upgrading the station, I'd rather they updated the services. Coming back from Luton last weekend took THREE trains, we used to be able to get a direct train (before they 'improved' the Thames Link...). Mind you, we used to be able to get a direct train to Gatwick from MW a few years ago. Obviously too much of a sensible idea to keep it going.

Chequers in Aylesford has just been bought by the Hengist restaurant. A quick lick of paint and reopens in a week, free of tie. So must have bought it off Enterprise? Will be interesting to see if they go gastro. I think the Hengist bar already gets listed on some pub websites.

I used to drink there just for the river terrace, but even that wasn't enough in the end.

Sometimes you wonder why some people choose to become landlords.

Openly sold drugs to anyone that wanted them and would beat the crap out of anyone who didn't. All the alkys that now frequent Wetherspoons would have been thought of as to posh for the Vic

You hear some stories about The Source and Dusk Til Dawn nightclubs. But I'm too old for them and can't remember the last time I went into a pub and felt really uneasy.

The other thing you don't see anymore is pub strippers with a jug full of £1 coins.

The last time I went into a pub and felt really uneasy was the Vic!

The other thing you don't see anymore is pub strippers with a jug full of £1 coins. I have obviously lived a very quite life - I've never seen either a pub stripper OR a jug full of £1 coins! As for rough pubs - there was a bikers' pub next to Maidstone West (the Railway Arms?) which no one I knew had ever drunk in. It had such an awful reputation! Always used to be a rack of motor bikes otside it. Now demolished - and not missed. And the Albion had it's day - now a 'husband creche', but once a terrifying place at times. Went for a pee there once and was jumped on by two blokes. One grabbed hold of me and the other was about to hit me in the face when he realised I wasn't who he thought I was. "Sorry mate - wrong bloke". Imagine trying to pee under those circumstances! Also tipped a pint down the back of a biker there once (accidentally!), and ran before it penetrated his jacket. Never run so fast or far in my life. Pity no one was timing me!

The pub you mean is "the Railway Bell " and was as rough if not rougher than the"VIC" but if you want to know how bad it was then ask Maidstone United legend Dave Matthews who was once landlord of this establishment. I myself used to frequent the place and I put my fair share of punters in hospital but had the shit kicked out of me more times than I care to remember.

Horrible place - I never even used to walk near it! It was S&N too, if I remember - I used to wonder why they didn't sort it out. I guess it made money? Funny they knocked it down too - just to make way for... an empty space.

A pub that's missing off my list, I realised today, is the old Stones Inn. Anyone know if that was 'real' pub, independent of the football club, or just part of the stadium?
