I reckon Adolf Hitler could pass the Football League’s “fit-and-proper-person” test.

When I started following football in the late forties Hastings and Tonbridge had just joined a Southern League containing Dartford.Gravesend and Gillingham. Then we lost Gillingham and Colchester to the FL when it expanded to 92 teams. The next time I weent tp Priestfield was to watch the Stones beat them on Boxing Day in the late eighties. Next season we may see Sevenoaks, who I can remember refereeing in the Kent Amateur League, join the Bostik League. How times change!

No I don't. Maidstone weren't promoted to the Southern League, they were switched from the 'shamateur' Isthmian League where they used to play with Bromley!

That's the first time I've felt young on this board - I'm in my 60s, but you were following football before I was born!

I thought they chose to join the Southern League rather than being switched. At the time the Isthmian was "amateur" and there was no chance of upward progression, whereas in the Southern League clubs were eligible to apply for election to the football league. In fact wasn't Stones joining the Southern League the catalyst that eventually led to the formation of The Alliance League from the top clubs of the Southern League Premier Division and the Northern Premier league?
