First steelwork went in today.
I know we've all seen the pictures, but seeing the size of the columns in reality, it really sunk in just how big that stand is going to be - as high as the main stand and the full width of the pitch. Full marks to O&T for doing the job properly - we are going to have a cracking stadium.
And imagine the same thing at the TE in years to come!
While I was there, I had a wander down the river side as well - now the trees are bare you can see things much better. And there is a lot more room that side than I had realised, we could easily expand the stadium a couple of meters in that direction one day (enough for a covered terrace along that side), without impinging on the riverside or upsetting anyone. Although there is, as always, the phantom biscuit main to be considered...
Wonderful how uplifting a wander round the JWW is, even if I do see it every day.
Who gives a toss about relegation?!

Quite right! if relegation happens, it happens. We'd have the infrastructure in place and hopefully a decent player budget for the next season, to have a proper go at going back up. Not that it will happen 😬

Great to read some positivity on this forum. The odd thing is I'm actually enjoying this season much more than the last one. If you take away the way the season ended (and how many of us honestly expected that?), it wasn't a great season, especially towards the end. We did the business, but at times it felt like a bit of a drag. This season I expected nothing, so just being back in the Conference (or is it Div 4?) gives me a huge buzz, having this wonderful new stadium to come to every other week, and seeing some teams at the JWW that we'd have had to do well in the FA Cup to see in past seasons, all adds up to a pretty good season - no matter what goes on on the pitch. Go into Google Street View, 'drive' down James Whatman Way and stop at the gates. Drink in the view of our beautiful stadium, then click on '2009' on the little box at the top left-hand corner.

It's not the whole width of the pitch .Or has this changed . Remember seeing the intial drawings, and corners were to be added at a later development stage
Conference has always been division 5 no higher no less . I've loved the away days this season ,hated home games we've played our worst football at the gally, I hate the them and us attitude at home ..Homes games have been a poor experience so far the ground looks a mess ,we know why ,and the atmosphere lacks I think there's too much paranoia at home games

Remember seeing the intial drawings, and corners were to be added at a later development stage It can't be the full width of the pitch without moving the floodlights pylons, so when it does eventually get extended it will have to be during the close season.

Are you sure it is the full width of the pitch ? I don't think so, floodlights would get in the way (Sod you daveu, typical getting in first)

It's hard to see in the photos the sheer size of these rear steel columns and the distance from the pitch.

Dont think it is full width, however you could re-position the lights on the roof of the new stand? It would then just be a short re-wiring job, possibly?

Sigh. This is turning into a typical new floodlights vs old floodlights argument.

Dunno, I was merely repeating the answer I remember from the supporters evening when the plans were first presented and somebody asked why it wasn't full width. I don't recall them going into any detail other than saying the floodlights would need to be moved, but presumably if you mounted them on the roof of the stand they would be a different height so a redesign of the system may be required to provide full coverage.
