Anyway... I was up the Tonbridge road the other day (a rare treat for me these days) and noticed the Bower Inn looked in a lot better nick than I expected - as I thought it had been closed for some time. But then I noticed it had suspiciously un-publike curtains at the windows... I assume it IS closed? Only pub I've ever been in where the landlady was so plastered, she fell off her barstool... Bower Inn got planning for flats above the pub a while back and has been shut for ages. www.kentonline.co.uk/maidstone/news/recalling-the-rat-trap-cellar-club-248614/Apparently there was a basement club in their cellar in the 60s called the Cat’s Crypt.

There was some sort of club behind the pub too at one time, but I'm not sure exactly where, or what it was. There are/were two buildings behind the pub, and it could have been either - one has been demolished now, but the other is still there. It's an odd bit of town - all sorts of strange businesses/buildings over the years, but, driving past down the Tonbridge Road, you'd probably never give it a second thought. The West Borough Club, next door, is a strange building itself - a lot of history around there.

The story should have been headlined: it's merde on the dance floor.

Only been in there once, and that was by accident. Always seemed an odd place - in an odd place, to me.
I think I remember Folb scoring a goal against us, when playing for Man City - or was that just a fever dream??

I forgot to mention that on the 16th Nov I attended a works reunion piss up at a packed Society rooms. The selection of Ales was as good as I've ever seen and the bar service was the best have ever seen at any Wetherspoons, every time I went to be served it took less than a minute. The bar staff seeing i was having trouble walking even carried my beer to my table for me. The whole evenings experience was a delight and put the Humphrey Bean in Tonbridge to shame. All of Wetherspoons could learn from the Society Rooms management and staff. 9.95/10.

Definitely one of the better Spoons, sometimes gets very busy on match days tho.

Society rooms is one of the better whetherspoons and far and away the best of the two in Maidstone. The Opera House in Tunbridge Wells is very nice. By far the worst I’ve ever visited was the Mechanical Elephant in Margate.

Please take time to email or write the management to tell them about your good experience.
That kind of message really makes a difference, particularly if you can name any staff members.
