Cellars is a decent pub, much bigger than a normal micopub. It's hardly far outside of town, no further a walk than the revered Rifle Volunteer or Flower Pot. Micropubs rarely have music, just decent beer and conversation. If that doesn't appeal, get yourself down to Muggs on a Friday night.
And as for having to walk down a 'dank alley'? Ooh, you poor lamb. I used to regularly drink in a pub that was on a disused industrial estate about 20 minutes outside the city in question. It won CAMRA's national pub of the year award twice.

It's a strange location for a micropub; just a little too far out to walk to. Maidstone does lack the number of empty shops some towns have, but there must have been somewhere more central. It feels a bit odd every time you order a pint, they have to walk into a different room to get it. One generic issue with 'micro pubs' is by definition you have to sit close by the other clientele - not always a great experience unless you enjoy second hand flatulence or some bore talking about the gallon they put away the night before. A real pub in Maidstone is the excellent Flower Pot.

The Flower Pot has to be one of the most cramped pubs in Maidstone.

The Swan has reopened and is now run by a Maidstone fan. It's had a lick of paint and is obviously close to the ground and the train station. Good beer etc..... Went there before the Torquey game so must be good luck 👌🏻

The Flower Pot has to be one of the most cramped pubs in Maidstone. Only when it's full of Stones fans or has a beer festival on. Reasonably comfortable most other times I've been in there.

The Flower Pot has to be one of the most cramped pubs in Maidstone. But not as cramped as something like The Paper Mill in Sittingbourne - man, that is micro

Can I put in a word for the Pilot?
Years since I drank in there, but it used to be my favourite pub - real fire, loads of different Harvey's beers (draught and bottled), cheap pool table, enormous home-made pizzas, live music nights... All in a shitty looking place half way up a street of closed shops, with traffic roaring past - I didn't even know it was open for years!
Last time I looked in, I noticed the pool table had gone, so I hope that's not a bad sign...

Is it a Sheps pub still or a free house? Sheps ( managed house ). Never drank in there (not allowed to go to pubs these days...) but it looks a lot better under the new management - more welcoming and less on its last legs. I worked as a Tesco home shopping driver for a few years and once had to deliver a bottle of whiskey there. Never quite understood that.

That's really sad, but like so many things, if you don't use them you can hardly complain when they're gone.......

On the flip side, every time I tried to use it, it was shut anyway.

No Ant , they saw you coming up and quickly locked the doors up to make you believe that they were shut and you ended up in Lashings !

The last decent pub near the town centre. Killed by the one-way system, I suppose. Once they put the that in, that end of Stone Street died. I'm surprised the Pilot lasted that long.
