I reckon it was unfriendly because you were drinking fosters ( maybe like going in an Indian and asking for an omelette )....... I said it was the equivalent of, not that I was actually doing these things... Alan, the previous landlord, retired best part of 22 months ago and Matt and Gina, ex of the Pilot, now run the pub. It retains its traditional feel in terms of the heritage-listed interior, but you'll find the atmosphere much more welcoming. There's now no keg lager - it was Hurliman's lager that used to be served and certainly was nowhere near £4! The four Goacher's beers on offer range from £2.70 to £3.20. If you call in of a Friday night, I might even treat you to a pint ...

Providing you view the Rifles as a museum you'll love it. Have they cleaned the clock yet?

What do you want from a pub? The Rifle Volunteers offers an interesting interior that was not ripped out like so many others, friendly conversation from non-threatening locals, and most of all good beer from a local brewery. If it was not for the previous landlord, it would now be just another house or takeaway. If you were opening it now you would almost give it that trendy title; micropub. Sounds great, but that just wasn't what I got when I went there. I actually like Goachers pubs and would prefer to drink in them, but my one and only visit to the Rifle Volunteers put it in the upper echelons of the absolute worst pubs I've been to. Definitely here to be proven wrong now so many people are saying good things! Will give it another visit and report back.

If you diverted across the river, you'd find yourself on the opposite bank to Drakes... Although, unless you like pretentious f**king students, that's not a bad place to be. Not if you're starting from The Cellars.

A much underrated Sheps Pub right in the middle of town is the Royal Albion: www.royalalbionmaidstone.co.uk/Nice pub, friendly welcome, used to offer a crèche for husbands to be left in whilst the other half spent the money in Fremlin Walk... Leaves a lot to be desired on a Saturday night, won't be returning in a hurry

Leaves a lot to be desired on a Saturday night, won't be returning in a hurry It was known as the 'bin' in my day - a notorious biker pub, best avoided. On one occasion a mate of mine was lifting a couple of pints over the bikers who always sat right by the bar when one slipped out of his hand and a whole pint went down this guys back. He didn't immediately realise what had happened, but we knew that it would soak through quickly, so we only had a few seconds - never run so fast in my life. Another time I was jumped on by a couple of bikers in the loo, but luckily they hadn't done too much damage before they realised I wasn't the guy they'd been waiting for. They dusted me down and apologised, but I couldn't pee for shaking! Then there was the female pool player who used to take on - and beat - blokes for money. And the memorable occasion when the Pyros played there and their smoke generator/flares/fireworks/whatever were so effective that you couldn't see your hand in front of your face for most of their gig. Not to mention the time when the manager robbed his own pub - getting a mate to rough him up a bit and then leave him tied up in the cellar! Lovely place.

I guess the more reasonable amongst us didn't suffer the problems you had

It was also known as 'The Bin' in my day and it was also a notorious bikers pub

Opposite side of the river you have the First & Last hidden away, which has a strong case for Maidstones best pub in my opinion. Anyone actually been to Cellars Ale House? I went in a few Fridays ago, and it was completely empty with no music. Would have made for an awkward pint in complete silence. Definitely think they need to review their 'No Music' policy or they're going to struggle... Went to Cellars Ale House a couple of weeks ago on a Wed night. Thought I'd give it a go... Myself and two friends were the only ones in there. A choice of 4 drinks and we were then ushered out at 9pm as it was closing. Based on that, will I go back? Errrr No!!

I know some people who have been recently too and have said it's been dead each time. I haven't been back and don't think I will. It's a shame - it could be good but they just haven't got it right, especially as you have walk down that dank alley to get to it!
