Thinking about that - what we need is the 'clock stop' approach they use in American 'football'. Every time there is a delay, the clock is halted until play resumes - plus, in our case, the ref could add extra minutes or wind the clock back (?) to make up for time wasting. With modern technology and refs wired up, this shouldn't be too difficult. And time wasting will practically disappear! Time wasting wouldn't practically disappear, you can still break up a team's momentum very effectively with time wasting. It isn't 'just' about running the clock down.

Given the current rules regarding doing too well with 3G pitches resulting in the punishment of relegation, does anyone else think that we should start throwing matches towards the end of the season if we are still up near the top to avoid being relegated? I don't mean anything officially spoken of or orchestrated of course, that would have the danger of coming out and resulting in a worse punishment. But maybe a few of the players would have the common sense to miss a few tackles, be second to the ball, forget to mark someone, be a bit slow blocking that shot, accidentally put through their own net once or twice, or blaze that shot at an open goal high over the bar. There would plenty of opportunities to manipulate league results in our opponents favour to lower our league position before it was too late to avoid the worse fate of being relegated for the crime of doing too well whilst having a 3G pitch (I don't say doing to well ON a 3G pitch, because we seem to play better away from it at the moment). I'd rather that we were cleverly fraudulent, than virtuously stupid in 'doing the right thing' and getting relegated for our honesty. Surely we wont need to throw matches if the ground is not up to the required capacity or at least planning permission is not in place. I don't see how that would work. Failing the ground requirements needed for promotion would just mean we couldn't get promoted and they already plan to deny us that for our 3G pitch. If that was all the 3G pitches rule was about then we wouldn't need to do anything, but there is also a desire to punish with relegation, and ground requirements needed for promotion wouldn't factor into that. I'm not normally in favour of such dishonesty, but we need to look after ourselves if officialdom is going to be so draconian and unfair. We were screwed over due to the old re-election rules when we won the Conference in 1983-84, now they want to screw us over a second time by denying us promotion (something we can't do anything about unless we win a legal battle - by no means certain) and then a third time with relegation (something we can manipulate the league to avoid). It would be grossly unfair to get pushed back down to the Conference South now, given all this club has been through over the years. So if we are to be potentially denied promotion again, as we were in 83-84, for political reasons, I at least want to see us remain in this division. I'm not getting any younger and I have already had to wait those 5 extra lost years to make it into the old Division Four, then all the wilderness years courtesy of Jim Thompson. I and many others probably feel we have suffered enough.
