Leaving it late means less time to get the team playing well as a unit. Quality keeper and 20 goal striker aside, functioning well as a team can be every bit as important as having star players, while fitness comes into that too. Therefore, hope we don't go too 'last minute' in building a new squad.

What Im saying is, no one has any idea how well they will fit in. Its just down to luck at this stage, when your adding 2 or 3 players to a group, then judging how they will fit in is important. Right now we need a group of 16 players or so, then start tinkering with the dynamics etc This is where I question the logic of starting afresh every season. The consensus here seems to be few of last season's squad would prosper in the NL and I won't argue with that. However, they were good enough to make the play offs, so why release the majority - it just creates new problems. However few people are party to what goes on behind the scenes and if the aim is to build a squad that WILL be good enough to not only win the NS, but (with a few additions) cope with the NL, then fair enough. Nevertheless, only two teams can be promoted each year and when you've done pretty well in one year maybe evolution is better than revolution? Glad I'm not the manager.

In recent years, and maybe longer, pre season friendlies have been mostly non events. FL clubs only send their youth team, while we have so many trialists and changes during the games they only have meaning to the managers and coaches. Which is what it is supposed to be, of course, but rarely makes much of a spectacle. "Big" clubs can get around this by playing round robin tournaments, which perhaps add a bit of interest and wonder if that might be they way forward. A revised KSCup? Games against NPL teams? Got to be something more interesting than what we get at the moment.

While it shouldn't take that long for a squad to 'gel' and play well as a team, experience suggests that it does - the back four learning to work with the goal keeper, midfield linking with attack and so on. Would say we were far tighter as a team at the end of the season than the start. Makes me wonder if wholesale changes, that many teams at our level seem to do, are really the best way to prosper? Evolution rather than revolution maybe? However, if the aim really is to get to the NL, the creating a squad that (with just a few additions), could prosper in the league above, then a fresh start could be the way to go. My phone impression is that most folk here agreed that the current squad would not have fared any better than Hak's one had we got promotion. Whether we have the money, or indeed are attractive enough, to do so, remains to be seen.

Could be that at least half the teams will be expecting to be in the playoffs next season as, on paper at least, it looks a much stronger league. We must hope that George's clear out is intended to produce a team capable of winning the league, rather than this season's 'consolidate and hope for the best'- which certainly worked out well in the end. You'd think Dorking and BW could both afford decent squads, but could either/both do a Dover and implode? I also wonder how many other clubs are doing the same as Maidstone? You'd think some would be tempted to stick with what they've got if they did well this season. Equally, wouldn't be surprised to see at least a couple of ex Stones players from the last two years appearing in an away team next season.

Was wondering why thoughts are appearing on this thread, then saw all the bickering on the other one... Anyway, wonder if giving the Riverside to away support might work? Section of seating one side of the gantry and standing on the other, or just let them stand? Open the burger cabin at the Genco end and make the turnstiles at the town end, by the river, just for away support. Might need to shuffle the cabins at the town end (new toilets there means something happening anyway), plus proper barriers to keep away fans safe from our mob, otherwise Robert is your father's brother? Or not..? Must be all sorts of reasons, separate toilets for one, but another, small, positive is that the usual 30-100 away fans can easily change ends for each half.

Two 'Kent' sides in the EFL then, lol. Guess Bromley keep the southern flag flying after Sutton's relegation, but fairly sure many round here will not be missing them, while our old stand stays in the NL for at least another season.

Oh well, good for them. It will be interesting to see how they (and the other three promoted side) get on. Near neighbours Kings Lynn certainly didn't fare well. Way back in the day, Boston were the highest level opponents I ever played against. They used an all weather pitch at a local sports centre and my student team ended up having to share one evening. We had some decent players, but couldn't get near them. Didn't stop their manager (seem to remember it was Colin Addison) effing and blinding at them the whole time.
