Yes I was at the game. I don't really know, I was watching it unfold. I was trying to get on the pitch to help Ashmore out, but some of the lads was holding me back. I think that Clay followed through on Ashmore during the game, and Ashmore said something to him at the final whistle. Then the rest of the players wanted to join in, I believe it was said a punch was thrown by an Orient player, but I didn't see anything. It's a pity it didn't hit the referee, just when you think they can't get any worse, another one comes along. Know what you mean about refs, but feel the linos have an awful lot to answer for, the amount of times the linos watch the ball go out and then look at the ref waiting for the ref to make a decision before motioning with their flag what to give. They are supposed to be assistant referees but they leave the man in the middle in the lurch far too often. When you say punch, do you mean a proper punch or one of them premier league footballer punches that wouldn't knock over a leaf. Pretty sure the lino's role is to indicate that the ball is out of play, and only offer an opinion on direction if the ref doesn't know. Quite often the ref has a better view of who last touched the ball. He then uses his flag to confirm the ref's decision.

My understaning is that the lino is there purely to assist the referee, not to make decisions, or indicate decisions taken by the ref. The ball goes out of play, the linesman waves his/her flag to indicate what they saw, and the ref makes a decision - usualy the same as the lino, but it doesn't have to be. If the ref thought something else happend, he/she is perfectly free to ignore the lino.

The how come the linos flag for fouls on a regular basis? Not in our league, of course, but elsewhere.

As a former referee and linesman, I can state with confidence that referees will tell the linesman exactly what they want them to flag for. Some ref's were such massive control freaks that as a linesman my only job was to indicate when the ball was out of play, and offsides.

I had this terrible vision of nws as ref and DaveU as linesman. It wouldn't be a short game...
But (desperately) getting back to the point - what I was trying to say is that the lino can't actually make any decisions, only the ref does that. The lino is just there as an extra pair of eyes.

I'm not sure whether to see this constant need for my attention as flattering or concerning. It is getting a little embarrassing for you though.
