Different times. The council back in the 80s and 90s wasn't really aware of the minor football club tucked away on the outskirts of town and saw football fans as hooligans and troublemakers. Nowadays we are right in the centre of town, we are a part of town life, with a huge local support, and (generally) football fans are well behaved. We are also run by a decent couple of businessmen, not an egomaniac you couldn't trust to tell you the time of day without an ulterior motive.
Compared to the old days, our council are actually being pretty cooperative and supportive. Give them another few years to get used to having a successful football club in town, and they will start to regard us as an asset to be supported (and something that brings business into the town!).

I would think G-lls are getting peanuts out of the council for the sponsorship. Better than not having a sponsor me thinks.

Councils are around for many decades with various councillors changing the deck chairs very five years. So they have long term tenure and massive influence locally.
So it makes sense to have a very good relationship with the council as like them, football clubs tend to be around decades too.
Well done Gillingham for getting this right.......... others please take note !

The Liberal party are no longer the largest party although conservatives do not control the council. It will be interesting to see if the slight change will help the club in their negotiations of the price for the piece of scrub land on the river side.

Poor form so far from the Council.
Surely, it can only get better ?

simply staggered that a council that constantly says it is supporting the club, do everything possible to make it difficult for the club, it really sticks in my throat that the amount of extra footfall the town gets on match days which in turn increases the money coming into the town and supporting the various businesses seems to go unnoticed by this blinkered lot, I am going to speak with my local councillor to see what he says

I have emailed my borough councillors, including the link to the Kent Online story, asking for their comments and providing my own opinion.
It might be a good idea for others to do the same. Councillors do seem to live in an alternative dimension where opinions contrary to their own don't exist unless they are contacted about them.

I wonder what the ground brings to the local economy, from fans' matchday spend in town, alone (before we get into the benefits of the pitch as community asset)? £10/person/ match, easily? League, Cup and Trophy total home attendances 58,249; + KSC + PSFs getting on for 65,000 - so by my reckoning £650,000 a year and then some.

There is also scope for this income to the town to increase in the future, as MUFC gain promotion, with higher numbers of supporters attending games.
If the council shoots itself in the foot by charging more than the club deems reasonable for a piece of scrubland, it will not be able to progress, hence the council will get nothing for the land and reduce future income to the town.

Always seems that every other council in Kent supports their club with actions and not just words.

Id be curious as to what the clubs versus the councils valuation actually is At the meeting in January Terry said they had it valued and were told its worth about 500 quid. Meanwhile the council are asking for 20 grand.
