So what the club is cuirrently doing is spending money we dont have. Then you hear people saying how well the club is run and glad were not like teams above and around us who spend money they havent got. Its starting to look like we are no different. Exactly! To be fair though the budget was set with the expectation of higher attendances but fir one reason or another these higher gates have not materialised. What is the solution? You cannot change the contracts that players have signed half way through the season and I very much doubt if it got serious the players would voluntarily take a pay cut. Lucas Covolan has already said in an interview that he hopes his success leads to him being employed by a championship club soon, such loyalty, and at the end of the season when he goes he'll be out of contract and we'll get nothing for him,a piss poor return for filling his pockets with a large amount of cash. I only hope that the club does not waste the FA Cup money on giving large bonuses to the players, yes we could give them a reasonable bonus for over performing but could we then ask for it back if the same level of performance is missing and we lose the next three league games. I know i stand alone on the subject of players wages,I know you'll all disagree with me but the welfare of the club must come first and I honestly believe that the wage demands of players and agents will f**k this club up in the near future.

I agree that the money should be spent on infrastructure...perhaps a little to sprinkle some stardust on the side but only if that player has a high ceiling / sell on possibilities. No Alabi type deals. I don't think these current owners will let wages spiral. they are learning all the time and if anything, the loss will have given them a wake up call. they already learnt from giving all the power to a manager (Wheeler) so I can't see them making this mistake. They'll continue to budget accordingly and frustrate the fans who will say "if Maidenhead, Wealdstone etc...." The bonuses are already in contracts by the way - they wont just be handing out money out reward them willy nilly. There will be some interest in some of our players I am sure. We will likely have some difficult calls to make. Sell and make some money now but scupper the season or lose them for free in the Summer. Perhaps we will try and offer some new contracts but we had our fingers burnt with Luque being on the wage bill for a year at £800pw

Don’t know how much Sword thinks our players are on, but none are wealthy or driving around in a Porsche. We are at the very lowest level of “full time” football, so almost certainly less than the average wage of fans in the stands. I don’t blame any of them who get the chance of playing at a higher level for more money. When George Elokobi gets a multimillion pound contract to manage Wolves, it will reflect well on our club who gave him his first job. The work he and his “overpaid” players have done this season will set up the club financially for years to come. So stop moaning and get your arse back to the Gallagher.

Most of the players are part time anyway. Lamar didn’t attend the draw because he was driving a minibus for young adults with autism.

I'll be back soon,I fell out of love with football but its slowly coming back and days like Saturday help even though i watched it in the pub. This Saturday I have plans but if I can break them I'll put in an appearance.

Then why are we calling ourselves a professional club if we are not? Professional means you get paid. Doesn’t mean you have to be full time and can’t have other jobs. The only people who claim we are full time are managers of other clubs making excuses for why we beat them.

If the club wants decent sized crowds for Yeovil and Torquay, how about selling tickets to those two games as a deal with preferred access to tickets for the FA Cup game? Season ticket holders would obviously get first dibs, then have a second tier of non ST holders who buy for Yeovil and Torquay and then the rest on general sale.
As a long distance supporter this would not work in my favour, but "...the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few - or the one" Commander Spock USS Enterprise circa C24

Hoyte talks about bonuses on the podcast. I've always assumed they are a standard part of players' contracts - I don't see why Maidstone would be any different.
As for 'professional', 'part-time', etc, the key difference at our level is day time training - which is obviously difficult if you have another job. Hence losing Flish and Mills when we went 'full-time'.
I doubt if the money we can afford to pay for all but the top players is enough to live on, especially if you have kids and a mortgage, so I would expect most players to have extra sources of income.
When I was at work, quite a few of my colleagues had second jobs or ran businesses of their own, and they were on pretty decent salaries. Usually it was helping friends' or families' businesses out by a bit of scaffolding or fencing at the weekend, but some had fairly serious businesses on the side. One guy drove a taxi at weekends, saving up for his daughters' weddings - he had three of them!
Unless it's prohibited by your contract, or in some way clashes with your day job, no one bothers about it. Why would we expect it to be any different with footballers? Especially as, at our level, they have less money and more time on their hands.

Sword what do you consider a basic wage without bonuses should be for a Maidstone player? Clearly not all players are paid the same so give me your views on Bivesh as a squad player and Lucas as a senior pro. As to players leaving for better offers, that is the nature of football, we never complain when a better player is persuaded to join us. On the other side of the coin there is no loyalty from a club when a contract expires

On the other side of the coin there is no loyalty from a club when a contract expires I'm afraid I am old skool. We are a non league club and at our level I feel £2-300 per week is more than adequate for kicking a ball about. The only person who should be on national average wage is George because he really is full time. Good money should be reserved for EFL upwards and if the players are not good enough to get an EFL contract then they and their agents should lower their expectations. Non league players at any level should not be relying on football alone to put food on the table. I understand that some of them top their earnings up with part time jobs,if this is so then I applaud them it's those that are happy to fleece a club, any club, that annoy me. Should we go up next year it'll be back to paying £20+ for admission far too much for non league football.

Swordy ! Old school or different planet ? Average players in clubs like Snodland, Lydd, Faversham and Whitstable earn £200 -£300 in the SCEFL. Players in clubs like Chatham and Ramsgate in the Ishmian League earn quite a bit more. I'm guessing that Stones 'average' players are likely to be in the £400-£600 range, plus extras. Top players more. That would still put our squad earnings in the top third for NLS but def no better.

Nick that is the whole point of my argument the players at non league level are being paid far,far too much and its not just us it's across the board, it has become a ridiculous state of affairs and its no wonder 10-20 clubs a season face the prospect of folding.Ask the Nuneaton fans if they think the money their players were earning whilst the club folded was acceptable. I may,as you say,be on a different planet to you but that sir does not make me wrong. Money is killing non league football and I am not the only person across the country who knows this but I'm one of the few who do not stick their heads in the sand and hope the problem goes away.
