Well, someone had to post SOMETHING about TOMORROW's game!!
What's happened to this board???
Despite Hampton and Richmond having 'dick' in their name twice, I couldn't think of a single funny title for this thread! And anyway, technically it's 'Hampton Wick', which is the rhyming slang - which is a different place - and they only added 'Richmond' to their name to give them wider appeal (a glance at their attendance figures will tell you how well that worked out...).
Looking at the current form table, H&R are 6th on 12 points on home games (from only 5 games - fewer than even us!) and we are, of course, top on away games - but also on 12 points, from one game more. So, really it's pretty neck and neck.
Both sides are also on 7 game unbeaten runs - but H&R's run is WWWWWWD (19 pts), compared to us on 15 points (WWWDDDW). They are also one place and one point above us, but have played 2 games more (so this is - wait for it.... a SIX pointer!).
H&R have had a very strange season so far. Had we been looking at this fixture just 5 games ago, it would have looked like an easy 3 points away. We were 8th, and on a run that would take us to 4th just two games later, whereas they were 21st, and hadn't been higher than 17th all season. But something weird happened shortly afterwards and 6 wins in a row took them from 21st to 3rd! www.footballwebpages.co.uk/hampton-and-richmond-borough/league-progress And now we're looking at a game that, on paper, we chould struggle to win.
So, are they the team they appear to be from recent results, or was their 0-0 draw at Tonbridge on Tuesday the beginning of a return to reality? And, are we good enough? Despite being on a 12 game unbeaten run and having the tightest defence in the league, we have struggled to score more than one in many games, and we've thrown away 6 possibly critical points over recent games.
My gut feel is that H&R's recent form is too sudden to be indicative of an overall, long-term improvement, and they are possibly more fragile than they look. And we are better than our recent record would suggest, especially now we have Rush in the side. I think we've got the confidence and ability to win this one, but, as always, a lot is going to depend on who gets that first goal.
