The regulation in question is EU Regulation 2257/94. It was drawn up in 1994 and took effect on 1/1/95. It categorises Bananas into 3 levels, allowing buyers to know what standard they are buying. It was first written about in The Sun in an article by Lucina Evans in September 1994.

He has repeated the bendy Bananas BS before. He also claimed, during the 2016 campaign, that it would be great to be able to buy Bananas in bunches of more than 3 again.

If you want to believe this story is 40+ years ago and prior to Johnson's arrival as a media person, you are welcome. It won't be true though.

Using EU Regulation 2257/94, you could just order class 2 Bananas which are not necessarily perfect shape. Since he became our Dear Leader, we have had Brexit, Covid and now the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Am starting to wonder if history will eventually call him Boris the Jinxed - though am sure there are plenty of other options.
