As the parent of 2 NHS front line workers, I am enormously proud of their efforts over the past 18 months. Exhausted for so much of the time, they have given their all for the communities where they serve. Their reward comes from giving to and caring from thankful patients, clearly not from the government and its derisory 1% pay award. So disgusting. And just in time to receive a 1% pay rise within a highly inflationary environment.

Just one example of extraordinary people bailing out government errors and getting less than nothing back in return.

Over 16000 new infections yesterday, apparently some of it due to increased testing in Scotland. Deaths up to 28 yesterday and hospital admissions rising too. Boris, meanwhile, tells the queen things are getting better. Doesn't sound like it to me. Plus of course, we now face Germany. Again. What's the betting on 0-0, then lose on penalties?

Still at least we can all rely on the new patriotic song I feel sorry for the guy that dreamt up one Britain, one nation because he did it with good intentions. However, the lunatics at the asylum have taken over and to have someone who was sacked for revealing cabinet discussions about China, to China, trying to tell schools that our children should sing it is particularly galling.

Confusion reigns in the holiday world again. Tabloids trumpet the chance to return to the Balearics and Madeira, yet they are only on the cautionary green list, so will folk be rushing home to beat the quarantine when they go back to amber? Add in another day of 16k infections and will Europe want us? Merkel doesn't... As for effectiveness of government initiatives, despite saying how important test and trace is as part of tackling the pandemic, recent data shows only 16% of the 690 million kits sent out were actually registered. Assuming a minimum of a quid a piece, that's another shitload of money wasted, to say nothing of what it adds to landfill. There are an awful lot of things that still ain't right.

We got the lateral flow tests kits, did it once, registered the results, and have ignored them since (we didn't like doing the test!). Never mind, I'm supporting the government's latest initiative by applying for the £400 voucher on the basis that I'm a pregnant woman who smokes, because I can't see how they are going to monitor the scheme.

I know someone who's been told to self-isolate for 8 days by the test and trace app but he has no idea who the positive case was - nobody he works with or socialises with has tested positive. Not sure what the criteria are on it but glad I've deleted the app. I've done several tests, not very pleasant. Tickles the old nasal hairs. No jokes about gag reflexes.

I see that Matt Hancock is now providing personal lateral flow tests to anyone who wants them by using his tongue as a probe.

Not sure what the criteria are on it but glad I've deleted the app. I've done several tests, not very pleasant. Tickles the old nasal hairs. No jokes about gag reflexes. I've never taken a test (and never want to!), but judging by the noises my kids make every time, it's not a pleasant experience! Both my kids' schools have had positive cases recently. with classes sent home. It's starting to feel a lot like last September/October. Maidstone still has very low figures, but even here cases are three times higher than they were just a few weeks ago. I was actually getting a little optimistic this time around, with infections increasing, but not exponentially, and, overall, cases very low in most of the country. I was hoping that the number of vacinations was having a significant damping effect on the spread. But recent figures indicate that we might be back in the poo again - the daily rate of infections is now starting to look more like exponential growth, and cases are increasing in almost every part of the country. And, although Johnson claimed yesterday that 64% of the population have had two jabs (an impressive figure if only it was true), he mispoke - it's actually 48% (the figure he quoted was for adults only). Whilst this is still impressive, it unfortunately leaves a hell of a lot on unvaccinated people for the virus to infect, most of whom are in the groups most likely to get infected and to spread it (the under 40s). And there just isn't time for a rapid vaccination programme to make much difference - if you have your first jab today, you won't have full immunity for at least 6 weeks. With crazy decisions like having Wembley at almost full capacity for the Euro finals (and letting all and sundry into the country to watch it without quarantine!) and Johnson seemingly determined to relax lockdown fully in July whatever happens, I fear we're in for a summer of fun. We just have to hope that the third wave doesn't have the same impact of the poor old NHS that the first two waves had.
