Probably not the right place to post this, but when has this forum ever stuck to the rules? To the theme of 'pasta joke', it seems to me that two areas increasingly stand out: Donald Trump and, sadly, elements of the UK government. Trump of course is simply showing his true colours - a selfish, arrogant fuckwit, with no sense of the bigger picture. Am sure Plastic Passion could come up with many more creative strings of adjectives, but the man just beggars belief. Elements of the UK government include Matt Hancock in particular, who is doing an all too good impression of a headless chicken. Am starting to doubt some of our scientific advice too, especially not being forceful enough over testing from the beginning. Germany and South Korea seem to have got it right and maybe even the Aussies and Kiwis, whereas the UK is increasingly looking like we screwed up big time. Whether another party would have done any better is doubtful. We seem to be lacking woefully in strong leadership and it looks like we could very much become the sick man of Europe if latest predictions become true. Certainly hope not, but ain't holding my breath. Don't forget Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand in nations that have dealt with the crisis in an appropriate manner. Hong Kong for example, a city of 7.5m people (similar population to London but a fraction of the area) living in high density accomodation has only experienced 4 deaths and 1018 cases as of today. Hospital discharges are now well exceeding new cases and the R0 reinfecton mean is below 0.5. You may laugh at us all wearing masks and carrying alcohol sanitiser but public transport here has remained open as have the restaurants throughout (massage parlours had to close though). EDIT: I have just been told by a friend that Heathrow doesn't temperature check people coming in to the country for symptoms of fever. If true, i have to say I have a mental struggle as to why this was not one of the first actions to be taken. Apart from HK airport scanning everyone coming in and quarantining any suspicious cases, every public building and restaurant here has temperature checks as well as social distancing between tables. The answer is testing & tracing and I am surprised that the UK was not intelligent enough, unlike Germany, to realise this on day 1. Whatever happened to the smart people in the UK advising ministers?

Important lessons... The concern for all countries not doing enough testing and tracing could now be, have things gone too far to create that level of control and indeed, as far as the UK is concerned, is the wider population sensible/aware enough to comply like Hong Kong and others? The USA meanwhile, talks about easing lockdown on a day when they register over 4 000 deaths! To me this exemplifies American attitudes. Many are very insular and pay little attention to what goes on outside their own state, never mind the rest of the world - the classic comments about Scotland not being far from London, for example. Three weeks into lockdown, the UK death and infection rate is very much tracking that of Italy. Their lockdown has been much stricter than ours, with the recent slight relaxation still probably tougher than ours too. The government meanwhile seems to still be pinning its hopes and isolation and a vaccine, hoping for some sort of miracle fix, rather than copying what works. As for football, we may yet see 'closed doors' matches on TV, but only at the highest level. As for anyone in hospitality, tourism and travel things look decidedly bleak, while local councils are now the next in line to say the heir finances and services are at breaking point. We need some radical and creative thinking on a global basis to plot a way out of this.

When a Geordie wrestler joined WWE they said his hometown was Newcastle, a small mining town just north of London. This was only about 30 years after Thatcher closed all the mines.

Certainly hope not, but ain't holding my breath. We are also victims of the nature of us being British. We love to travel the world - This virus loves to spread and has taken advantage of the fact we visit every corner of the planet. We couldn't lock down the airports as how would all our citizens outside have been able to come back. Seen on BBC today that Mauritius has had 9 ill patients ( about 350 positive tests ) - 2 deaths ( 1,2 millions population ) - No new cases for 5 days - Achieved by closing flights in like New Zealand and Australia. A further report said flights coming in were only UK citizens returning home or vital supplies being flown in. This Covid - 19 virus loves us because we travel the world.

You're looking at a much smaller population and a much smaller land area. Most countries would struggle to implement the same measures as Hong Kong.

I've bought three Maidstone shirts over the years, and at last they have come into their own. They drip-dry perfectly, so I keep wearing and washing, wearing and washing; it's cut down my ironing by more than half!

To encourage face mask use why not have some MUFC themed ones in cloth that can be washed?

Same population as London, but a smaller area means for easier transmission. Fortunately the health professionals threatened strike action in January to force the governemnt to close the majority of border crossings with PRC. That along with scanning and testing all arrivals and people being well disciplined in social distancing, mask wearing, hand washing and sanitising has meant we are getting through fairly unscathed. They might even re-open bars on Friday which have been shut for 3 weeks now.
