Give the guy a break, he's trying, what's been proven is our defensive is not good enough, players from last season still at the back, that's just to start, can't be bothered to write the rest we all know, clean sheets win games, both centre backs at fault for both goals Sat, say no more, coys It's not the defence, we are conceding goals at pretty much the same rate as the first two seasons. The big difference is goals scored - well down on the last two seasons. Harry should stop f**king about with the defence, and concentrate on the attack - more attacking midfield, and players who can actually score goals. Exactly conceding goals at the same rate as previous season, not go enough, I did say we know the rest, ie no goals, clean sheet gain points, defence, no proper right back, centre back that have a mistake between them waiting to happen, glad he signed a new centre half, play him with swaine, let's hope for better

Much the same conversation that we had on Saturday! Turned out to be the highlight of the game...

I’m not adverse to long ball football. If played correctly it can be as effective as tippy tappy football. It can also be as entertaining. The one flaw in Harry’s plan is you have to have players up the pitch to put the ball in the back of the net. If you stick eleven men back in your own box to defend corners and free kicks that plan goes out the window. Also the two players we have up top have one goal between them. They are isolated and although always give 100% are never going to get the Returns we need. At least two midfield have to be close up with them at all times.

I think we are all seeing the same as each other. Reminds me of 'The Emperor's New Clothes'.

The Stones have got to pick up the majority of second balls. They don't seem to have done that up to now.

The route 1 style to an extent was used by Leicester when they won the league, so used correctly can be very useful. At this moment in time i don't give a damn how pretty the football looks as long as we win, once we pull ourselves to mid table safety will i start to worry about what the football looks like, but until then the only thing that matters is winning games of football.

Long ball football rarely produces good results and tiki taka isn’t the only alternative to it. The counter-attacking football of Leicester or Arsenal at their best was not long ball. It was quick, controlled forward movement of the ball against high defensive lines. They usually got behind the defence by playing through balls - which players could run onto without having to bring the ball down - or dribbling fast towards the opponent’s goal and, at the last moment, having drawn the defenders to them playing it sideways to an unmarked teammate.
Long ball/direct football is virtually hit and hope. The attacker has to receive a high/bouncing ball and is outnumbered by defenders who are close enough to put in a challenge before he’s properly controlled the ball.
Harry wants ‘direct’ play whenever there’s the slightest pressure at the back. It seems illogical but booting the ball is not the ‘safe’ thing to do. Long clearances nearly always lead to a loss of possession and the opposition bringing the ball back into our half. For Oldham’s second goal we ignored simple short passing options and ‘cleared our lines’ – as per manager’s instructions. The ball went, as usual, to the opposition and on this occasion resulted in a goal.
Long ball football also denies the midfield the chance to construct attacks. Rather than receive the ball to feet and move it up the pitch looking for teammates and space to play into they have to fight for every ball. When they win the ball their teammates aren’t in space to receive a pass as they are still in a narrow, defensive position. This makes the midfielders jittery. The forwards have little reason to find space because the only time they see the ball is either when the opposition defence has it or it’s dropping out of the sky for a contested header.
Long ball football only works in the long term when your forward line physically dominates the centre backs and you regularly win the knock downs. If you don’t have those forwards then you have to trust your defenders to pass to your midfielders and let them play the type of football that you recruited them for in the first place.

Perhaps this thread will finish now Harry has signed Robinson. Time to start praising the manager (and the owners).
