I used to live nearby. Imagine the Society Rooms but smaller, bright purple and gaudy, an empty wine and cocktail bar during the week. At the weekend it’s full of chavs tanking up before heading off to the Casino Rooms nightclub for a night of fighting. The owner, who once had a chain of Medway pubs has been trying to sell it for years. It might have changed since I was last there, surprised they are doing bands, but not a pub I would travel to use. The Eagle next door was good for live music. It’s almost as if, the Secret Drinker is a forum regular. www.kentonline.co.uk/whats-on/news/it-was-like-having-a-pint-on-the-strip-at-magaluf-290361/Sad that the Eagle no longer does music. The Sunday lunchtime jazz club was legendary. Where shall we recommend SD visits next? Got to be somewhere out of the ordinary. Rather glad I gave the City Wall a miss then.

Sounds ok if you’re under 30. Not much appeal for an old git like me.

One of those moments when you realise that if you didn't live here, you'd visit to do this (but, because you live here, you don't bother!). Although, having lived in Barming and then down by the river in town, I've actually done variations of this walk many times (although much has changed over the years, especially at the town end). He's a bit disengenuous about the trains though, as most of the stations are some way from where you want to be!

Could do similar the other side of town, taking in the Malta Inn, then walking up to excellent choices in Aylesford. Not sure if that new footpath which washed away was ever repaired. Edit. The quotes came in above £2 million to repair the riverside footpath, so that section would be along industrial Forstal Road. The Malta Inn is chav central - possibly the most disappointing pub I've ever been too. I have vague memories of it being a nice pub many years ago (back in the 80s?) and, with it's location, I thought there'd be a serious chance it would have turned from a nice pub into an excellent one. So, when in-laws came to visit a few years ago, we took the boat up to Allington, to show them a proper English pub... Horror of horrors! Luckily we later found decent pubs in Rye and Canterbury, which hopefully helped erase that awful memory. As for the river side path, 25 or so years ago, I tried cycling along it to Aylesford - and very nearly ended up in the river! There was no path at all in some places.

The Malta Inn used to be a fantastic pub, lunch by the river, perfect.New owners about 20 years ago have slowly turned the place into a gold mine of profits at the expense of ruining the ambiance of the pub. Last time I went the food was shite as well. I'm in no hurry to return.

I went into the Stag Inn last Saturday, having missed my bus,and boy have they fucked that place right up. Gone are the low tables and chairs in the main bar, replaced by high tables and high chairs that require a f**king ladder to climb up on them. There are a few low tables in the back area but unfortunately the chairs are far too narrow for my big fat arse. Also gone is the decent music ,replaced my modern rubbish that sounds so similar that you don't know when one finishes and another starts, the sort of song you won't be humming in 50 minutes time let alone 50 years. I've added it to the list of pubs to avoid unless I have a really good reason to go in there.

You'd think they'd realise in advance that this was going to happen? Even when I lived 5 minutes from the ironically named Lockmeadow, I only ever went there to watch a film or two. The place has the ambience of a toilet. And a souless and expensive toilet. In Chav Central.

In the far off days when I went out Friday and Saturday nights, I never knew how much drinks were anyway. I just handef over notes and accepted whatever change came back! It was difficult enough to get served at all in many places, so there was no way I was going to start arguing about the prices.

If you can forgo the alcohol I’d thoroughly recommend crossing the sluices and visiting The Little Old Tollhouse for a coffee and a decent variety of cakes, ice creams and savoury snacks. It’s all outside so decent weather is a prerequisite, but the staff are friendly and the company convivial.

In the station house Tonbridge all day Monday to Friday a pint is 50 p cheaper than the weekend. Kronenbourg is £3.45 which is cheaper than spoons.
