If ever there was a condemnation of the post-war modernist attitude of 'old bad, new good' it's this: View AttachmentThought the same when looking through the article. Glad to see they kept the - err... soul of the pub when re-building it!

Grew up near the Blue Door. It had a very bad reputation, although not as bad as the other local, the Park Wood Tavern. As I reached my late teens I was much more likely to be found in town, firstly The Eagle and then later the Royal Albion, or even occasionally The Cock at Boughton before it became a poncy restaurant.

The Albion (or the 'Bin', as it was known) was a very dodgy pub back in the day. I nearly got beaten up twice in there - without ever doing anything wrong!

You haven't lived, come away from there with a fractured cheekbone just for saying the band was shit. Mind you the bloke who nutted me was the drummers brother🤣🤣🤣

It was a dance school and bar at one point and many years ago Maidstone supporters had a fund raising evening there where we all got pissed and were entertained by Maidstone's no.1 band HOBO JONES AND THE JUNKYARD DOGS

The dance school was called something like The Margaret Reedy School of Dance. According to Mrs JDL, who knows her dance schools, it taught ballroom, etc, rather that the usual ballet/tap/street/whatever.

My wife knows her through her work as a Marriage Celebrant and told me she's hoping to sell it as a going concern, so hopefully will carry as a venue and events centre

Would be a relief as flats are the last thing we need in or near the town centre now.

Those reviews are weird - either the place is fantastic or it's a hell-hole, nothing inbetween! The Jekyll and Hyde of pubs...

Maybe those later reviews were by Russian bots - more were after May 2022.
