Very sad if it does close (again), this was my 'local' (nowhere near where I lived, but well worth the walk) for many years.
But not been in there for ages as I rarely go up that end of town (although if I did I would happily walk past the Thirsty Pig!). As Sword says, it is in the wrong place - although, in fairness to the Pilot, it was originally in the right place, only (as always) the one-way system fucked up that end of town. As with Broadway, the shops, etc in Upper Stone Road were killed off by the new road layout.

The Pilot used to be in Upper Stone Street when I frequented it too many years ago to recall.

No you are correct but whisper the name for st the moment it is closed to traffic and causing travel chaos in the town.

Bar Chocolate is a weird one. Walk past 8.15 on a Tuesday night and it's rammed, with a cheesy disco. Walk back at 9.45, it's empty and they're closing up. Who were they and where did they go? Strange because they are usually open until 04.00 every day. Maybe they have a private party later or something.

Bit of a divergence but what are/were your three favourite pubs near the town centre and why? My top 3: 1. The Pilot - Harveys Sussex Best, the fireplace and it's cosy 2. The Thirsty Pig - the beams and its sense of history. Was also near school many decades ago. 3. Drakes - daytime only when the clientele is a bit older. Absolutely love the sense of it being a coaching inn with the stables out the back plus the plaque on the front.
I now realise that I am more interested in the aesthetics and history than the beer. Very sad.

Very sad. That is not sad at all, when I am out and about I visit pubs that have history to them. I love looking at the architecture. I adore looking at the photographs on the walls or the paintings that are steeped in history ,it is not only about the beer. As for your challenge. 1. The White Horse, London road. Though my visits to this pub are now very rare this used to be my second home back in the 80's and 90's. I used to be in the quiz league here ,and was in the darts team and was even the captain for several years. 2.The Druids ,Earl Street. When all day opening arrived and the White horse didnt embrace it I found myself wandering down to town and into the Druids. The pub has changed its name on many occasions but is now, thankfully back to it's original. I have many friends in there and have had many a wonderful conversation in there over the years and is still my first port of call when I am about the town. 3.The Market House. Again this pub has changed names but reverted back to the Market House. I used this pub mainly at the weekends for their awesome live music but although the music is still there I am afraid Shepherd Neame have destroyed the place, it has no soul anymore.

The Cherry tree probably hasn't been mentioned because it's way out of town so not convenient at all and because its the shake's local! 😂

Flower Pot Pilot Little Gem (RIP) - not in town, but too many good memories to leave it out.
Drakes, Druids, Thirsty Pig in their day (when they were all called something different!), but not for the last 20 years or so.
I'd like to add the Rifle Volunteer, but it's never been open when I've been up that end of Union St!
Worst three:
The Vic The Railway Hotel The Railway Bell (?) - biker's one that used to be near Maidstone West
Strangely all station pubs.
And a personal three:
The Duke of Marlborough - the only pub I've ever been thrown out of The Albion - the only pub I've been attacked in The Lower Bell - who refused to let me use their phone one freezing day, when my car had broken down, with my wife and baby son in it. Bastards.

And a special mention for Frobishers - if for no other reason than the framed back page of the KM they had by the gents "They're up, they're down!" (Stones promoted/Gills relegated)

This is more like the Eagle I know - your comment the other day was so unexpected, I assumed you meant another Eagle! The Eagle seems to function mainly as a sort of weird people trap - the reason the other nearby pubs are (usually) relatively sane and safe is that all the people you don't want to meet in a pub are in the Eagle.

And what is wrong with weird people?
