Rightly converted to real ale, I can't stand lager anymore. I lost my ale virginity to a bishops finger and never looked back. Alas some of you insist on drinking the tasteless piss called lager. And some of of you enjoy the good stuff. So, to help the custard cream waving lot in the club bar, vote in favour of your drink/poison.

Bishops Finger is the best Shep beer by quite some distance, nice and hoppy and not too gassy. For something a bit darker I would recommend Theakston's Old Peculiar, and for a decent every day beer, Old Speckled. Hen or Sharpe's Doom Bar

Controversial suggestions there, Dave!
It's like overhearing a conversation about OFAH when someone says "I like the one where Delboy falls through the bar"!

If you want to support a local business, try ales from the 'Musket' stable - brewed in Linton. The 'Fife & Drum' is simply gorgeous ! www.musketbrewery.co.uk/

In a former life I used to be a real ale man all the way. I still have the beard as a reminder.
I would say the choices so far are extremely mainstream and am a little disappointed in the choices.
The Barnsgate brewery near Ambleside produces some cracking ale.

Didn't like to go to far off the beaten track for someone who is a relative beginner to real ale. The other thing is, I don't actually remember the names of all the obscure ales I've tried over the years, and some of them were pretty good and probably deserved remembering. Two good examples of local brews sampled at football were at Margate and Tonbridge, both of which were decent beers and neither of which I can remember the name.

Doom Bar was a no-brainer a few years ago (no offence, town enders), but it's become so mainstream it's the Fosters of Real Ales.
White Horse (London Road) has it, but has Adnams Ghost Ship, which wins it for me now, can't beat many of the Adnams offerings to be fair.
Never been a Harveys Best fan.
Flowers Original is one of my all time favourites, but haven't seen it anywhere for years :-(

Real Ale is for blouse wearing blokes! Guiness, that's my drink of choice, although I am now moving on to a nice pint of Dublin Porter. Still, if weak 'real ale'floats your boat then who am I to try and persuade you otherwise

Ah, Bryan, I've been expecting you!
Still an improvement from the stuff they kick out of Australia you've been swigging for the previous 25 years!
