I think the real reason is 2226 isn't the actual attendance. A lot of people who didn't need to purchase tickets to get entry. Compare a game that's very close to capacity (e.g. Bognor or Wealdstone at home last year) with one of the games supposedly at capacity and it's likely the club doesn't report the actual number of people in the stadium at those games.

I think the reported gate frequently has little relationship to the actual attendance.

Two examples from this season, for instance - the Welling game, where we stood in our normal place in the Town End and there was still space to fit more people in (much like VCD), and the Stevenage game, where we couldn't get into either end and people were standing three-deep all the way round the pitch. Both were sell-outs, and therefor the gates were exactly the same.

If Welling was 2,226, then Stevenage was more like 3,000.
