As much as I'm embarrassed by the drivel he spouts he's not exactly the first clown to complain about a perfectly valid pitch. Did you crucify the Welling manager this badly?
Secondly can people please stop bringing up the whole Farnborough thing. It happened to them, not you, and I'm sick of every set of fans from every team using it as a stick to beat us with. When you've been hearing for the most of the last 10 years you tend to get tetchy about it.
He may be a bigheaded prick but he's our bigheaded prick, and based on his record, not a bad manager either.

Actually Jamie Day took a fair amount of stick for his comments. Regarding your last paragraph, your forum would seem to indicate that you are in a fairly small minority, or are the Westly out brigade just a lot more vocal. In a way you feel sorry for the bloke, being the target of such a large amount of vitriol.

At the moment its 50/50 but if we don't perform well between now and the end of november I can see the majority of people turning on him.
To be fair the people who complain are always louder and we've never been the sort of club to lack patience or acknowledge our good managers.
GW is in a rut I won't deny it but until he's sacked I'll support him and the team.
Also the GW out brigade seem to forget to blame the team as well, yesterday we were tactically poor but in all honesty the real problem was our players. Our burger flippers worked harder and with more skill than our starting XI yesterday (Day and Henry excepted).

Don't take it to heart fortress, we get a lot of ridicule regarding our pitch and we are fighting our corner. We understand what the pitch has done in respect of getting this football club and getting ourselves on the footballing map again. So you'll understand our attitude when a pitch which the vast majority of teams enjoy playing on gets criticised before a ball has even been kicked. And for the record the top division in Scotland has 3 plastic pitches, the top divisions in both France and Holland also have them....our pitch had the highest grading FIFA have....so to read it being compared to the pitches used at QPR etc 20/30 years ago is actually quite ridiculous.

I haven't got a problem with the pitch, if we lose on the 20th its because you outplayed us.
And can kind of see where you're coming from about the pitch meaning something to you now. What was the reaction by fans when it was first laid?

Fair point Fortress but to put this in perspective we have been on the receiving end of a shafting since 1992 up until 3 years ago. Everyone has taken great pleasure in our original demise and even now like to remind us of it at any opportunity, along with all the masters of wit coming out with memorable quips like "plastic pitch, plastic fans" and " where were you when you were shit" . I don't think this is an attack on Stevenage as a club just some of what the media are reporting G. Westley has said, but knowing that nothing reported is ever twisted I do tend to take these comments with a pinch of salt. I can guarantee you Westley and the Stevenage team will be more than prepared next weds/Thurs , and I don't think any Maidstone supporter will expect us to win , it's just when you have been to lowest level possible, clawed our way up , nearly lost it all again and finally now when we are seeing something a bit special as a club, to hear what is frankly a load of bollocks come from so called experts who have no idea about 3G of the quality we have, it does some what piss us off. Anyway on that happy note I do hope you enjoy it when you come down, and as for the pitch wait until you have seen it play within 5 minutes you will have forgotten it's not grass. Oh and Jamie Day the welling manager got abused far more.

What was the reaction by fans when it was first laid? The most frequent comment I heard from away fans (the few we actually get in our league) was that once the action starts you forget it's not grass. My only objection to it is if the sun gets on it at certain angles it looks a bit too shiny, but that's a really picky argument in the overall scheme of things. After the opening game against Brighton Gus Poyet said it was magnificent, but then they had just beaten us 5-0.

What was the reaction by fans when it was first laid? It's a very good question and if we are honest none were jumping for joy when it was announced, however we appreciated the 3G pitch was pivotal to us returning home, we needed to generate other revenue streams, we needed to engage the community, and we needed to do something revolutionary........it would be great if you could get all that from a grass pitch but we are now in our 3rd season and we have seen some quite brilliant football in that time on a surface that encourages good football. Tom Pett is probably one of the stand out players who has enjoyed the surface most. Naturally I forgot to mention the use of these pitches in the top tier of Rugby!

Fair enough here. Your fans may not be too confident about beating us but to be honest our lot feel the same. This isn't a Ryman League side v a League 2 side, this is a coin flip. I honestly can't call it and most people I've spoken to feel the same. Unfortunately I've got my anniversary with the gf coming up so can't afford the trip down, but I'll be watching it down the pub. Have a great evening next week, your team and town thoroughly deserve it

I HOPE we dont spend next Thursday getting bogged down with westley, any chant at him is one less that our team gets.
i also hope that any travelling Stevenage get the same warm hospitably that we got in there town and bars,i honestly cant recall a game (APART from any one with DH)..of so many hand shakes and chinks of glasses.
i didn't think we would win on Sunday ,and i don't think we will win the replay, what Westley fails to realize or maybe he just doesn't know ,through lack of experience of 3G, is that a good passing game and talent is better suited to 3G.
Good point about Tom Pett he raved about it on his twitter at the time and had a couple of exceptional performances.he didn'tget muddy knees or a long term injury.
Westley is just being ignorant and showing fear of the unknown.

I argued passionately against 3G, until seeing how well it coped with torrential rain against Brighton during the first ever game. I was won over by its performance, not the fact we have it. Maybe we just got lucky with the bad weather, but we did enjoy feeling smug when we were operating normally while virtually every other game was being called off for weeks, including the Conference who had just voted to not allow 3G. What goes around comes around. www.sbfa.co.uk/I was totally unaware of the Farnborough story until now. What an appalling tale if true. Managers, eh? Many did not want Jay Saunders to get the job here, and more than a few were calling for his head on here not so long ago. Football fans have never been good at seeing the long term picture.

Anyone I know that follows lower league football has respect for Stevenage & their fans and they would all love to have an owner like Phil Wallace. The contempt for Westley has nothing to do with the club, it just that he is a complete knob, but i do admit the game would be poorer without him. I was surprised when Stevenage went back for him again, surely time to move on with a fresh approach.

The main arguments about the pitch are ridiculous. Jamie Day tried to blame the injuries to two Welling players on it - if it's that dangerous, why is our squad FULLY FIT after so many games this season?
They also say the ball rolls slowly. As a team, when you travel around to different grounds with grass pitches you are going to be presented with slow ones, fast ones, mud baths, 'bowling greens', flat ones, slopey ones, long grass and short grass. The teams that have any of those pitches could be said to have a home advantage. If there is a home advantage to Maidstone because they have a 3G pitch, why should that be treated differently to any of the other quirks you find?
How can it be an advantage anyway, when every team trains on 3G. I bet any football manager would love to have a 100% accurate model of the pitch his team will be playing away on in their next game, for a training session. With a 3G pitch they have it every time they kick a ball around! If the ball does roll a bit slower, then that shouldn't be alien to a team that spends hours training on an identical pitch every week.
And finally, that rolling slower thing - slower than what? A dry pitch, a wet pitch, a pitch with long grass, a pitch with short grass? Does the ball roll slower on 3G than it did in the bog at Warrington the other night?
These arguments would be laughable if they were not being consistently made by professional players, managers and administrators who have a strong voice through the media, and command respect. It is very frustrating but all we can do is to continue trying to educate people about just how wrong these arguments are.
