I have no idea why Dartford FC are so anti 3G. Why would you want your pitch to be in this state when you are due to face the best supported side at home in the Conference? /photo/1Not sure if the link will work but you can find it on twitter by searching for "NWaterman09." Jesus, that's bad! (The link does work - thanks.) I'm sure the whole 3G thing with Dartford is just the old Dartford v Maidstone thing going on. They can't get over the fact that we got promoted into the FL, and that we had to rescue their club from going under. I remember one of the early Invicta games at the old training pitch against Dartford, and they were mouthing off about it even then. Threatening to bust up even the few bits of the old ground we'd manage to salvage. Still, chances are they'll get at least one opportunity to play on a decent 3G pitch next season...

I think you'll find if it wasn't for us they wouldn't be playing at Princes Park. They should be thanking us the ungrateful swine dogs.

Well, with JT in charge you never knew what the hell the truth was! But it's at least partially true - our 'groundshare' with them gave them a tremendously improved stadium (albeit with rather more yellow paint than they might have preferred!), and they did get into financial trouble, and we did have to bail them out. Quite how and why all this happened and what else was going on, I've no idea. And, with JT gone, I suppose we'll never get to the bottom of it all. I've always assumed Bill knows more than he lets on - perhaps one day he'll tell us his story?

Remember that Stones/Dartford game - it was a Youth League game as well, so mums'n'dad mainly in attendance! It was all Youth League then! It was all we had left. £1 to get in, including the 'programme'. And bastard Dartford fans lording it over us all through the game. Broke my heart going to that game - I never went to another Stones game until the GS opened. I know some people will condemn me for that, but the Stones going bust really broke me, they'd been my life for so many years. I didn't watch any football, even on TV, for years after that. But, on the up side, my first game at the Gallagher was one of the most uplifting experiences of my life - nothing short of a miracle. BTW - the old training ground is still there, I've got some photos somewhere - I'll upload them if I can find them. On my last visit there was almost nothing left (a few light poles and the old floodlight control box - empty, but still with it's yellow door), but a few years ago there were still some signs that it had once been our ground.

Here they are. Had to go back a lot further than I realised and there's not as many as I thought. I might have some more somewhere. The first picture is (roughly) where the centre circle was, and the other two are one of the few remaining floodlight posts (then with PA speakers still attached).

A couple more of London Road: The old Critics' Corner, and roughly where the pitch and main stand once stood. Attachments:

To my utter-utter annoyance, I deliver to the shopping complex that was once The Athletic Ground every day for work - and every day I stand and reminisce before getting slightly angry at all the b*st*rds driving across our old pitch!

To my utter-utter annoyance, I deliver to the shopping complex that was once The Athletic Ground every day for work - and every day I stand and reminisce before getting slightly angry at all the b*st*rds driving across our old pitch! I know exactly what you mean. For years I couldn't physically walk past that place, I used to get so depressed. Then they switched our local poling station to the Mormon church, so I had to go there at least once a year. But now I have two kids at the school opposite (Brunswick House)*, so I'm there twice every day in term time, and, at long last, the pain and loss has faded. The daft thing is that none of it really matters now - the GS is a vastly superior stadium to the old Athletic Ground (running track, dog shit on the terraces, gent's loo with no roof!), and the new MUFC is a much better club and team than the old Stones (I see a quality of football at the Gallagher that I couldn't have dreamt about at London Road). But still, I invested so much of my life in the old club, and it was such a blow when the club went. No one should have to go through that - seeing your club die. (*Second marriage - I really AM an old git!)
