What the suits at the helm of the Conference would do well to remember this week is that without the foresight of Maidstone United's former Chairman, the late Mr Jim Thompson whose vision of a national division for non-league sides paved the way for the competition that is today known as The Skrill Premier, but the same Mr Thompson also campaigned for many years to get automatic promotion between the Conference and the Football League.
This week a new generation of Maidstone United Directors face the same daunting task of persuading out-of-touch 'traditionalists' to bring their competition up to date and into the 21st Century.
Here's hoping that Oliver Ash wins his personal battle and allows non-league football to progress in the same way that his predecessor did all those years ago.

A difficult arguement to win as 'traditionalists' don't do the vision thing very well.

Unfortunately I think we've no hope. I do however believe that if it is a "no" we'll get the decision by seasons end courtesy of some intervention from people more important than the conference and / or big bad scary lawyer types.

This is only the start, this vote has come about because of Sutton utd,we know the rules that the conference have set.
I think the rule change will not happen this time, and if we win the league or playoffs they may turn promotion down.
That's twice they may have possible turned it down ,they wont be able to do so forever.
I personally think they will put a time frame on it,at the end of this season they will say ,3g is allowed from say either 2016/7 seasons.
That way it would give other clubs time to build a 3g pitch if the wish, and they would not be changing a rule for one club.
if its not in our favour this week, do not see it as a defeat.

Either way oliver, we're with you. Either way, we carry on. This is only the beginning, the foundations. Sooner or later it will happen. Go on my son.

Hoping for a knockout blow in round 1 but think Olivers good to go the distance if need be.
Common sense must prevail in the end.

If it doesn't happen this time around, my fellow Maidstonians, do not be too down heartened. Ever since 1989 we have faced battles such as Woodcut Farm, MBC planning department, newts, roman ruins, electricity substations, strange league rulings (remember getting to the Kent League after finishing third in the County League after Bearsted were awarded a 0-0 victory against Snodland), unable to gain promotion because of our lease arangement, FINANCE, ground gradings, mormon churches throwing us off their land etc etc etc. We haven't won every battle and at times we have thought we were down and out. Somehow, each time, we have dusted ourselves off, stood up and kept going (we even managed to find the energy to play the odd game or two in there). We will do so again and the bods at the Skrill league or whatever they want to call themselves had better take note. The Wat Tyler brigade are on the march towards their holy grail and they will eventually be overrun, overpowered and beaten into submission. They can do it nicely or the pitchforks will be out again!

Undoubtably vote will go against us as two thirds majority needed to get rule change through just cant think it will done through courts under restraint of trade. A snowy end to winter with lots of postponments and clubs struggling to play wages on crowds of less than 1000 might give a few chairmen a reality check.

Oh exiled, let it rain, let it rain, let it rain. Let the Conference programme be disrupted like never before. The Conference might have the male suits but we might get Mother Nature in our corner and as every married man knows, the woman generally gets her own way.
Failing that I have a plan B in which I send my two nippers in to the meeting. The oldest will strop until the suits give in or the youngest will be cute, lull them into a false sense of security before delivering a knockout blow. We've got this in the bag!

As has been said elsewhere, really proud to be part of a club that pioneered the way for non-league football 30 years ago, campaigning for automatic promotion to the League and that we're still pioneering now. We know it took a few years last time. Hope we're still doing the same in 30 years time and that I'm still around to see it.
