We made the back page this week! But only a single column, the main article wasn't even football. Inside it was mostly Mangles. On the subject of crap local papers - what happened to Downs Mail? (Always thought that was a rather unfortunate titele...) Haven't seen it for ages - it wasn't bad by free sheet standards (better than Adscene at least - although that wasn't a high target), but it had rabid loony-right/pro-Brexit editorials. It lost all its ad revenue in Covid and shut down in lockdown

You were right about the Downs Mail loony editorials, they were off the scale and far too political for a local rag.
Covid or not, public interest in the printed word has dropped a lot.
Looks like the relationship between the KM and the club is at an all time low.

So, where is the best place to look, on line, for a post match report?

So, where is the best place to look, on line, for a post match report? The club’s own report and post match interviews are usually up on X soon after the match is over. I’m not sure why KentOnline doesn’t have as much coverage because I’m pretty sure Craig Tucker is a Stones supporter. Maybe be it’s just that he doesn’t have time to submit them as often. I doubt it’s an editorial decision.

"Smell the coffee"
It's all gone tits up since the Craig Tucker 'scoop' catching George off guard in that infamous post match report.
Coincidence ? Not a chance !

Do you really think the club has that much influence over the local press. And even if they do, why would it be in their best interest to eschew any kind of free publicity. I’m sure the true explanation is much more prosaic.

I’m sure the true explanation is much more prosaic. You're probably right. From what little I know of the printed press and local papers (I knew a previous KM editor very well, but that was years ago), it's a very hard business these days. Circulations are way down, ad revenue is very poor (both impacts of the internet), and papers are generally run on an absolute minimum of staff, especially on the editorial side. There's also lots of cost cutting, like using unedited agency press releases and PR blurb a lot more than they used to and consolidating local editions (for instance, the Medway and Kent editions are essentially the same paper these days, with very little editorial difference). It's basically a business that has been declining for at least the last 30 years, and is approaching the point where it will no longer be financially viable. The KM is read almost exclusively by older people, so readership is, quite literally, in terminal decline. No newspapers can survive without advertising, and that is also in decline - compare the size of the KM today to just a few years ago, most of that difference is lost advertising. The modern local press is run on a shoestring, and they simply don't have the resources to cover much of the local 'news'. They rely mostly on organisations supplying them with copy, and if that doesn't come in, they haven't got the time or resources to get it themselves.

No report on KoL again. In the past, there has always been something there within half an hour of a game finishing. As for alternative match reports, something other than the club website would be preferable.

Kent online sports have match reports from today's games involving Gillingham, Ebbsfleet, Tonbridge and Dartford but Maidstone are not mentioned as even playing !!!!! Craig Tucker, it would seem,is now reporting Tonbridge games.

If this continues, the club have a problem, because without publicity, even negative publicity, how can they get the neutrals and part time supporters interested? With our next three matches all away, apart from the FA Cup next weekend, Maidstone United's public profile will further erode.
