At the end of last season, seem to remember there was a lot of discussion about the importance, or otherwise, of being able to bounce straight back to the NLP. Already, it seems the pendulum is swinging towards 'can we even stay in the NLS'? All too often in football, people want instant success, with even a couple of wins meaning automatic promotion or a couple of defeats meaning we are doomed. The bigger picture ain't like that of course and in the case of MUFC it all hinges around the virtual dismantling of the club, player wise at least, last season. Without large amounts of money, no club can expect to bounce back from a season like the one just passed. Look at how the likes of Wolves, Man City and currently Sunderland endured several seasons below their expected levels before climbing back. At the end of last season, those of us preaching caution were castigated for having no ambition, but the truth is that only two clubs can be promoted and it may well be that our resources are not up to it in the coming season. Doesn't mean we can't of course and hope springs eternal, but tempering expectations hopefully means you've got a better chance of being pleased if you exceed them and likewise less chance of being pissed off if you don't. Right now, good home form (winning more that we lose, at least) and runs in both big cups will do nicely and then as confidence builds, we may yet make the play offs and then who knows?

[What do you class as a big club? Compared to other NLS clubs we are a bigger club than most, we have a very high fan base, on average 2000 per game, so that generates a healthy income, the rental from the pitch etc also brings a massive income, so why can we not hope to improve. Last season was a financial disaster for the club, firstly the money Saunders spent on players that proved useless, then the fortune that the clown wasted put the club back further than we all imagined. Now we need to realise it may take 2 maybe 3 seasons before we could get back to the NL. Will we be able to maintain ST sales during that time without fans going off to other clubs. Time will tell, yes theres a loyal bunch but at a guess 1000 or so could easily drift away to other clubs. That would be a massive blow to the bank accounts. I'd be surprised if we lost a lot of supporters. Once you've watched the team of your choice for the first time, you are usually smitten, and no lack of success can change that. I know, I lived through the barren seasons of 1967 - 69!

You see, Nick, we aren't that far apart! EGT highlights made us look a bit better (apart from their goal! ), but there again what league are EGT in?
Big test tomorrow night against Daggers and Saturday vs Southend. The last two opportunities for the main starting 11 to get playing together in a convincing way to compete in NLS. I hope they put on a show to inspire - its desperately needed!
Hope Stephen Ohoh plays again. Mind you having two players with odd footballing names doesn't inspire......I am waiting for the commentary now...........poor pass to Im-a-luzor.....Oh Oh!
it's Okoh not ohoh. If the commentators won't to throw in some name puns. That was a bit iffy - when Iffy Allen does something wrong That was truly Devine - when Danny Devine does something good. Lol. The EGT match highlights had him down as Ohoh! That is definitely iffy!

Thought we'd sorted this already - there aren't any highlights (either we or the performances aren't worthy) we currently get 'key moments'.

If I say the younger fan base rather than the more mature ones are more likely to seek shall we say more exciting fixtures than what the NLS an below could offer.

I don’t think we will lose many fans, but it’s to be expected. I think whatever happened to the club, you’d probably always get 800 or so show up. The 50/50 fans on the day who pay on the door is the one which will take the hit because if the atmosphere at the ground is sour, and there’s another season of disappointment it’s not really an attractive prospect for an afternoon.
Personally I think the Ash and Casey are more than happy to stay in the NLS for a few seasons because they know they aren’t going to put in any more money to get that “next level” squad that makes us a “solid bet” team for promotion which is where Havant and billericay are.

Pretty much agree with that. Sure there will be some 'glory hunters' who may not come now we're back in NLS, but I'm not sure it will be that many.
Atmosphere is a bigger thing I think. And it's not just about whether we are storming the league, the NLS season was easily the favorite of my short history with the club, but up until the last 5 seconds of the post season I had no inkling that I was watching a promotion side. TBH I don't remember too much great football, I remember a good few games where I felt we'd mugged the opposition by a single goal. But it was fun - more of that an chance are I'll make significantly more games than I made last year.
Hopefully thwarted expectations won't create to much of a negative buzz.

It wasn't a great season for thumping people mainly winning by 1 or 2 goals but it was a fantastic season with the realisation we could have a shot at getting promoted and the Margate games were excellent. But Ebbsfleet were top for so long I thought they had it in the bag and they wiped the floor with us when we played them, that season with the break up of the Ryman winning team was the last time we had a settled side

Asking around I get the feeling that 90% of the older generation will turn up again pretty regularly. But if the team is only good enough for mid table or worse, the younger generation is at risk. Expect gates to average around 1700/1800 unless we are doing well, in which case 2000+ can be expected. Waiting to find out whether John Still is truly a magician who can turn water into wine.

I note the very gloomy tone on this forum.
Friendlies mean little.
I go into the season with belief. ( until results in meaningful matches and weak performances prove otherwise).
Isn't it time we put last season behind us and move on.
Cheers.

I would be happy if we could change a habit of lifetime and actually win the local derbies, as in Dartford Tonbridge and Billy rickay

Only one person ever did that, Nick, and he was more than a Magician and I don't think even lovely John Still can beat the Lord Jesus!
On current showings I think we may need a miracle to get anywhere close to NLS play offs - but lets see how they are shaping up this evening, we may be being negative too soon!
