For a player to be on side there must be TWO players between him & the goaline, usually the goalkeeper is one of them, not in this case . correct decision.

There were two players on the line, therefore not offside……...Absolutely correct analysis, today was my first opportunity to view the highlights and this critical decision given by the linesman and accepted by the referee is a classic example of POOR officiating, no way should the referee have agreed with the linesman, he should have over ruled him, its basic refereeing and i hope somewhere along the line the "referees association " use this as an example of how not to officiate. Its no wonder the crowd were upset…...TG retired class one referee.

He only saw the number 9 next to Frannie.

Does standing behind the goal line mean he's not on the field of play and (providing he stayed there) shouldn't be counted? Or am I talking out of it again?

Exactly what I was thinking beachside, if it happened outside the goal he'd be out of play, is it different in the actual goal? Surely not! Where are the anoraks when you need them?

I've actually seen this in action before, where a defender slid off the pitch attempting to make a tackle, the player in possession played the ball back to a colleague and then received it back again in what appeared to be in an offside position from which he scored. There was a lot of debate (on match of the day I think) with everyone claiming the goal should have been ruled out, but Howard Webb explained that the referee was right to allow the goal because the defender, although off the pitch, was still in play.

After four pages, I have to explain that the purpose of this thread was to keep me updated at work with the score as the game went on. It never happened. However, I have got four pages of ol tosh about offside etc. Thanks! Why can't anyone keep a thread on track these days!
