"But what about the idea of giving the PL reserve sides some real, competitive football? Well, here's a radical suggestion - form a PL reserve league. That way, the PL standard teams get to play regular, meaningful, competitive games against other PL standard teams every week. Now why has no one thought of that?" Thats too sensible John! There was a Premier League reserve league a few years ago. It should be brought back along with the Football Combination. Should never have got rid of it. They would rather disrupt the pyramid that people worked so hard to achieve in the first place. Have you ever wondered why the reserve league was discontinued. Oh the fans were not engaged in sufficient numbers. Do you think watching Stoke B will be an attractive fixture to see ? Of course watching Stoke B would not have pulled much support in the reserve league but neither would watching Stoke B play in League 2 or 3 and thats the point. Attendances for those matches would be awful as fans of real clubs wont want to see their team pay reserve sides.

Good idea Daveu/Sennockian - Spennymoor have just won the Northern League for the fourth time in five seasons, yet have no ambition other than to compete in the FA Vase. All clubs that win their league at level five and then refuse or are refused promotion should be upgraded to the FA Trophy the following season. Otherwise they are just clogging up the pyramid.

That's his solution, get David Beckham in at St George's Park! What a prick!

He mentions the wonderful centre at St George's Park, I think he is including the 3G pitches in that. I agree we need to improve the quality of coaching but the facilities still need to be in place to do that. Considering in recent months we've had Steve Harper and David Dunn visit the Gallagher Stadium as part of their coaching badge the decision to prevent us playing in his leagues becomes more baffling.
So he describes facilities where they have played fully sanctioned international matches as "wonderful" and suggests we need better coaching but offers no incentives for clubs in his league and below to go down that root (root of the problem or route)
Interesting there is no mention of the bottleneck of clubs below his leagues who provide "wonderful" facilities and great surfaces for coaching but are being prevented from progressing into his "well run" club.

Just a thought - does anyone know Spennymoor's attendance figures? Did they decrease every year they didn't get promoted, or hold steady?

As everyone knows, if you don't get promoted every season attendances plummet.

It would be ridiculous to think that I would produce some evidence suggesting that the anti-Maidstone brigade are wrong. I will ask the Office for Budgetary Responsibility to check the figures, as I must have mucked them up.
