Which ones and Where are they Sword? Not been to Ipswich since 1990 so my knowledge is way out of date. I will try to find my diary of the visit.

Ipswich is a curious place. Chic and trendy on the spruced up docks area, but a bit down at heel in places in the town. Premier Inn on the Quay is a decent overnighter and there are several good restaurants nearby. Ocean Fish Platter is the best restaurant in town. Looks like a chippy from the outside, but well worth it if you like fish.

East Anglia = beer desert except for Abbott Ale and Old Speckled Hen if you can find them on proper hand pumps.

When I lived in Essex/London, there was a local that had beers from that area that were pretty good (I can't remember the names of the breweries). But that was 40+ years ago, so things have probably changed. In my West Ham days, the fans had some interesting chants about Ipswich and Narrrwich!

Looking back in my diary from 1990 I spent time in two pubs The Lord Nelson in the town centre and The Punch and Judy not far from the ground .I remember the Nelson being the better of the two. As I say this was 34 years ago and one or even both may no longer exist or be called something different.

CAMRA Good Beer Guide lists eight pubs in Ipswich, including the Lord Nelson.

The Lord Nelson is a great little pub. Bui1t in the 1600s. It has real ale (from Adnams and others) and is my regular pub! Other pubs along the Waterfront include Isaacs and the Briarbank. Lord Nelson is behind these and across the one way system. The Punch and Judy, mentioned by sword, is closed and has been for some time. The usual away pub is the Station (apropriately just across the road from the main train station) five minutes from the stadium.

The Fat Cat pub all day long. Needs a cab ride from the station but really worth it. There's a Chinese across the road and they allow you to order and eat in the pub Highly recommended

You don't get a lot of Adnams up this way, so I've only ever drunk it in Maidstone - The Pilot to be exact - and you're right, it's a great ale. For some reason I thought it was south coast brew. I might need to do more (ahem) research

A short stroll away from the ground and station into town looks the best bet.
