24/08/2021 - Bearsted 1 - 0 Rusthall, Honey Lane, Bearsted ( att 127 )
Some SCEFL games are a pleasure and easy on the eye, this was not one of them ! With both teams towards the bottom of SCEFL Premier, an important evening to try to climb away from the basement.
The start was all Bears pressure, on 7 minutes a long cross from Hatful on the right hand side was headed back and just cleared by Rusthall. A rare Rusthall break on 14 saw a collision between Bears keeper Barnes and an oncoming Rusthall forward - no foul / no pen. More Bears pressure thereafter, but the final ball was often tentative and wayward. Shots by Petrisor and Wakefield going over the bar or being blocked. Rustics featured a bit towards the end of the half, but again finishing not up to standard. H/Time 0 - 0.
Second half started as before, all Bears. On 51 a surging run from full back Mayjoyegbe resulted in a deflected shot going for a corner, and 2 minutes later another strong run down the right, this time from Bears # 7 Russo resulted in substitute Stace turning and putting in a good shot which was blocked. On 60, the excellent Bears # 10 Hatful was tripped ( maybe ) in the box to earn a penalty ( perhaps the ref gave it as an accumulation of niggly fouls ), no matter, Stace's weak spot kick was too close to the keeper and easily saved. Huge Bears pressure thereafter, on 72 another half hearted penalty appeal was waved away. Three minutes later, a rare Rusthall break saw them have a 2 vs 2 with the the Bears D which was well blocked away. Finally on 76 Bears scored, a ball pulled back on the left hand side of the box was well driven home by Stace. On 87, Rusthall were reduced to 10 men, when their # 4 got a straight red for an awful late tackle in midfield. Six minutes of stoppage time resulted in no further action to leave Bearsted victorious.
As always a pleasant evening at Honey Lane, made more memorable by the presence of half a dozen gobby kids urging the Bears on, but the quality of the football ( esp the finishing ) left a lot to be desired.
