There is something about the persona of Reece Mogg that I've always found chillingly unpleasant. Now I know why. Cove the Gunt not much better, while adding in the likes of Patel and IDS does not make a pleasant guest list for dinner. Bojo meanwhile says he's not worried about labour shortages and inflation. He may not be, but many others are, including his own party. It's not the Tories fault though, it's all down to big business not paying decent wages. Surely though higher wages translates to higher prices and higher inflation? Worrying complacency or astonishing stupidity? Maybe both... Nothing like biting the hand that feeds you.

I'd like to see JRM lose everything and live off what he thinks is OK for others. A despicable man

The Mogg photo is apparently not edited - just a lucky shot with a shadow in just the right place!

I see Aaron Banks attempts to avoid a £160k UK tax bill have failed. Surprisingly, this staunch backer of Britain was using the ECHR to try and avoid paying his fair dues. British Courts, delivering British justice...

Edwina Currie perfectly illustrated the ignorance of real life at the heart of Tory hierarchy yesterday by suggesting that the low paid should talk to their bosses and ask for a rise, or if they were having transport problems, ask for a company car. REALLY¿ ?¿ FFS.

Ah the blame game. It makes everyone seem much happier sitting in queues if they can blame someone. It’s no one thing causing this problem but as usual it gets pigeon holed as Brexit’s fault or Boris’ fault. Everyone needs to grow up and vote for Labour or the Lib Dem’s….but they won’t. They’ll be taken in by a few sound bites nearer the election and/or some social media lies about Labour’s sums not adding up or Kier Starmer being a commie. Brexit was never going to be a smooth transition to the land of milk and honey. Those who voted for it will have to wait for 20 years to see how it pans out. Unfortunately so will those who didn't. Let's face it, Brexiteers are never going to admit that anything is Brexit's fault.

The Daily Star gets headline of the day award this morning. In response to a shortage of underwear being warned and the price of pork due to rise, their front page reads Knickers off, sausages up. Very un PC, but made me smile. The list of potential shortages still growing mind, while energy and council tax rises look like they will add another £1000 to household bills next year. Tough for those on lower incomes, as if it wasn't hard enough already. Convenient that came out the day after the Tory conference or what? Still bills may not be as high if we have lots of power cuts. We'll all be cold, but will at least save money! For once find myself agreeing with the Bojo over gas from Russia. Putting that much power at the beck and call of Putin not something we or Europe should be doing.

We get 5% of our gas from Russia although I appreciate that gas we get from EU countries may originate in Russia. One big problem we have is lack of gas storage, which stems from the days when we imported nothing. Of course, a lot of our gas comes from Norway, Belgium and Netherlands. They are all in the IME, which we left. They are bound, by contract, to supply the IME first.

No need to import it if we can produce it ourselves.

Still bills may not be as high if we have lots of power cuts. We'll all be cold, but will at least save money! For once find myself agreeing with the Bojo over gas from Russia. Putting that much power at the beck and call of Putin not something we or Europe should be doing. It's not quite that simple - he also badly needs the money we (Europe) pay for the gas. Russia looks like a big country, but in economic terms it's actually only medium sized, and it's struggling to play with the big boys - its economy is a car crash. Russia's GDP is only a bit higher than that of Australia, and much less than the UK, Germany, France, India - even Italy. South Korea actually has a bigger GDP than Russia. And if you look at it per capita, it's much, much worse - Russia is 78th in the world ranking, below Hungary, Poland, Croatia... It has a GDP pc about a quarter of ours (and a 7th of the US), in fact it's only just above the world average - and that includes a host of incredibly poor countries. Even ignoring the very small countries like Andorra, which always skew these tables because of their tiny populations, Russia is still about 55th (on the same basis, we are around 20th and the US is about 5th). Interestingly, China is only two places above Russia in the GDP pc table, but they have nearly ten times the population (and I know which side I'd bet on in a fight!). Russia has less than half the population of the US, in fact only just over twice ours. In short, if it wasn't for its enormous landmass and the big hairy bollocks it inherited from the USSR (or thinks it did), we wouldn't regard Russia as a major player at all - any more than we would Italy, Canada or Spain. The USSR collapsed because it didn't have the economy it needed to match the US’s military spending - it had to choose between maintaining huge armed forces or feeding its people, and I'm pretty sure Putin knows this. He can puff out his chest and make threatening noises about cutting off the gas, but he knows how much damage that would do to his economy, and what the consequences would be - the world is far more economically integrated now than it was in the days of the cold war. There is also the small matter of global warming - Putin also knows that Europe (and even China) will have to wean itself off gas over the next 20-30 years, and where's he going to get his money from then? It's vital for him, not only to sell gas now, but also to sell as much of it as he can before no one wants it any more.
