So, Gibraltar - a bit like Sheerness, with a big rock, some monkeys and more sunshine - is now the only viable place for a summer holiday abroad. Lovely. A crystal ball not necessary to see that coming, because the situation around the world remains tenuous at best. Throughout the pandemic, the government has been keen to appease the various lobbyists to open pubs, shops, travel etc, but not always in line with data. Foreign travel always going to be a tough one, but few places around the world are Covid safe yet and those that are either don't want us, aren't exactly holiday resorts or are dangerous for other reasons. Hence, as before, the government (and especially much of the media) is guilty of raising people's expectations, when really they should be doing the opposite. Currently, the picture is a real mess. Vaccinations are going well for sure, but not well enough yet. Mutations are popping up all over the place, with seemingly no firm data on how effective vaccines are against them. Everyday life certainly feels better than just a couple of months ago, but the Sword of Damocles still hangs by a thread over how things are going to pan out. We certainly ain't there yet. Education plans still a mess too - is there really nobody better that Gavin Williamson? Education plans could be heading for an even bigger mess soon. There's evidence that the new variant (whatever they are currently calling it) is spreading faster in schools - many schools in the current hot-spots are already closed. As for vaccinations going well, it certainly looks that way, but the people most likely to spread Covid still haven't been vaccinated. Logic would indicate that you should first vaccinate the spreaders, then you have a chance of keeping the virus under control while you vaccinate everyone else. But we have done it the other way round. So here we are, just coming out (or not) of the second lockldown, still with no means of stopping another wave of infections. I suspect that the 'government' have (very belatedly) recognised this, which is why they've suddenly started letting everyone have the vaccination (although still not school children!) and have instituted mass vaccinations in the worst affected areas. But this is very much shutting the stable door after the horse has Boltoned. Apart from the fact that two doses are necessary for reliable protection, the vaccine takes three weeks to become effective. By the time any sort of local widespread immunisation has developed, we will be several months into the third wave - still with very little to stop it.

Surge testing going on in Maidstone? Has Sword been on one of his dodgy jaunts to India again? As far as I can tell it's precautionary. A couple of cases of the Indian variant in ME14 and they just want to ensure it doesn't take a hold. Overall the infection rate in The Stone remains pretty low.

While the government is right to be cautious about 'opening up' from 21/6, you have to wonder about the logic of the final stage being so complete, not least because of the expectation it involves. Limitations presumably have to end at some point, but talk in the media about anything ranging from another month to next spring hardly helps those businesses, including the Stones, from being able to plan ahead. If there really is to be no going back, then expect Bojo to be careful on Monday, both from a political and safety point of view. Maybe he should have set up more interim stages - after all, will be things ever be 'normal' again?

Maybe he should have set up more interim stages - after all, will be things ever be 'normal' again? Lockdown fatigue us to be expected, of course, but if you look at the data, there is no difference in the figures (number infected/rate of infection) between now and the begining of the second wave in September. If there was a national medical crisis then, and in March 2020, then there's also one now. We need to do now what we failed to do early enough on both those occasions. Of course, Johnson will argue that the high rate of vaccination will make a difference and prevent a serious third wave, and let's hope it does. But this is more clutching at political straws of desperate hope than actual scientific analysis. The facts are that, so far, the virus is behaving exactly as it would be expected to, and the high rate of vaccination is having little or no effect - mostly because those most likely to spread Covid are still not vaccinated. And add to that that the delta variant appears to far more infectious and that infection less likely to be prevented by vaccination. And emergency vaccinations are unlikely to have the magic effect Johnson hopes for either - it just takes too long to be effective. Even if you get your first jab today and your second asap, it's two months before you're protected. And two months on from this point last September we were in deep shit.
