Quite profound in an odd sort of way, parochial enough, witty, amusing and a thoroughly good read. Another classic, can it get any better ?

Good stuff, though not sure the word 'politician' is suitable for Farage, but then PP did offer alternatives. Remember being at Gillingham (sorry about that), for an FA Cup third round match v West Brom. Brendon Batson was playing then and some in the crowd thought it fun to throw bananas at him.

It was like that at Stonebridge Road when some of them turned up in their Gillingham merch and started abusing Mark Gall. The looks on their faces as they did were as if they felt it was just a bit of a laugh.

Excellent piece. Speaking as a child of the "no blacks, no dogs, no Irish' 50s and the Rivers of Blood 60s, but who lived through the vast improvements that followed, I still can't quite believe the post-Brexit country I live in now. I'm not one to be 'proud' of my country normally, but, living part of each year abroad, I was actually quite proud that I came from such a tolerant society. Not any more.
As for Brunswick House, it is still oddly white. My daughter, who left 4 years ago, had no black or Asian children in her class, and my son, who is (technically) still there in year 6, is in a class of 30, with just one Asian kid, two mixed race, and no black kids at all. Maidstone is a lot less white than it was 30 years ago, so I can only assume that this is yet another negative effect of school selection.
The contrast when my daughter moved on to Invicta is really noticeable. In the group of half a dozen or so girls she regularly walks to school with, there is only one 'white/British' girl, and the inclusive culture of the school is a small ray of sunshine in this darkening world.

That's got more to do with ethnic minority over representation at grammar schools. But that's a whole other kettle of fish.

I'd be grateful for any advice on how to load the photos in that article, I just have grey squares (my wife isn't that good at cutting my hair).

I've no idea what Medium is, but in Firefox you can just click on the photos and copy or save the image. The collage of photos at the top is all one image, by the way.

Thanks for the advice, there's a handy prompt on a right click, "Show picture" - unfortunately it doesn't work! I suspect I have a problem in my pc, and no suggestion is going to cure it. I'll call in I.T. Dave once lockdown is over.
