The Meander around maidstone thread has got me thinking about how the shops have changed over the years, and I suddenly thought, apart from boots, are there still any original shops left in the mall from when it opened as the stoneBorough centre?

What about the butchers (Rooks?)? I don't remember it being there in the Stoneborough days, but then I'm a veggie, so I probably wouldn't anyway!
I remember Sainsbury's being on the top floor, with a separate frozen food (then a novelty!) department on the floor below. And Tesco was where Iceland is now. (Iceland was at the bottom of the multi storey car park on what is now Fairmeadow - knocked down years ago, to be replaced with... a car park!)
The thing I most remember from the old Stoneborough Centre days was the ceiling, which was covered in weird coloured shapes (and lights?) - very 70s! When they changed it to the Chequers (which is still what it's called in our family), they took all that stuff down and just had a plain ceiling. But they also opened up the ceiling in the middle and created a skylight in the 'atrium' bit. Anyone remember the clock that used to be on (or above?) the bridge bit? It did something on the hour, but I can't remember what.
Remember TWO Safeways? One was at the bottom of the multi-storey car park in Kings Street, and the other was next door to where I used to live (where Lidl is now). The first time my then girlfriend came to visit me (she lived oop north), her brother drove her down from London, and I said I'd meet her outside Safeways. She didn't turn up, so I went back home to she if she'd rung and left a message (life was complicated before mobiles!), and indeed she had - she'd been waiting for me for half an hour outside the other Safeways! I'd completely forgottten there were two. She wasn't happy - nor was her 6' 3" brother...

Yes, tescos was on two floors, where Iceland is now, and also up on the top floor, what is now vision express. The bottom floor was the food court and the top floor was home and wear. I remember sainsburys having a separate off licence shop outside, which later became the trolley park.
