Ok, though Dillygaf stands for ' do I look like I give a f...' Three games gone and no I didn't, but Portugal Spain is improving things. Not sure England can play at this level.

In the World Cup there will always be much dross between sublime moments.
Watching Spain and Portugal, one can but despair at England's lack of style and ability.

"style", "ability" and "England" - all in the same sentence! And without the word 'no'...
Anyone else wondering just how likely it was that Russia would win 5-0 in the opening game, with Putin watching?
A cynic might be misled into thinking that it had all been staged.
And, whilst discussing cynicism, did I imagine it, or was it not fairly conclusively shown that Russia only got the gig via bribery and corruption? That pesky cynic might even go on to suggest that, once this was discovered, the bidding should have been re-run, without Russia being included.
Wildly extreme, I know, but I thought I might just throw it out there. As (apparently) they say.

Russia is a major world power with a huge population and the infrastructure to stage major tournaments. Why shouldn't they get the World Cup? Far worse countries have been awarded major tournaments.

The issue us the way they got it. FIFA's selection process stinks and has done for years, and anyone who thinks the corruption stopped with the downfall of Blatter is seriously deluded.

It's not Russia's fault FIFA are corrupt and that was the only way to win a tournament at the time. They played by the unwritten rules and won. Kind of makes up for winning the Olympics and having them ruined by the American boycott.

Infrastructure - nope they don't comply with the FIFA requisites with regards to stadia, there should be at least 12 grounds with a minimum capacity of 40,000 with one venue greater then 80,000. The stadium the other day with the massive temporary stand only brings that stadium up to 35,000 plus Russia only has 5 stadiums that have capacities of 40,000 or more with the biggest being in the 60,000 range. The infrastructure in terms of stadia to hold the event falls well short of FIFAs requirements to host a world cup, these requirements are clearly documented in the bidding guide produced by FIFA. Although to be fair only three European countries meet this requirement, Germany, Spain and us (but only if you count Tottenham's new ground and either Twickenham or do a joint bid with Wales to include the millennium stadium).

Would that mean that Wales would automatically qualify? Worth doing just for that!

It has to be said. So far the Russians are staging a pretty good tournament.

Putin has got exactly what he wanted. It badly needs a Jesse Owens moment.
If they continue their 'surprising' form and we manage to overcome Sweden, that could be us! Or it could all go horribly wrong...
