Great article, thanks for posting the link Moley. Not often something on here starts with a quote from T S Eliot.......

Great man, great footballer. Came from non-league backgouund: Molesley and then Hayes. In the mid-90s remember seeing him at Wycombe.

Wonderful piece, thanks, moley.
Thankfully, we've come a long way sinse those dark days (although still with a way to go), but what a sewer those days were. Even for those of us who lived trough them, it doesn't seem possible now that such vile racism was so commonplace, and (mostly) accepted.

Football and Premier leagues are holding a minutes applause tribute for him today. Hope the club organises one. A fitting tribute to a great ambassador.

Not knocking him at all, just a genuine question.
As someone who only knew his "twilight years", how good was he? Sadly it's the done thing to overhype players when they've passed away, so I'm actually interested to know how decent he was in his prime.

Always difficult to judge players from different eras but he would probably get in the current England side, and would probably have featured more in the England side of his era had he been white. Very strong and quick, good in the air and on the ground. An all round striker. But more than that, it was his dignity and mental strength in the face of endemic racism that set him apart. Some modern players would do well to take a leaf out of his book rather than whining and getting upset at every perceived insult.

Cheers, Dave. I get the personal bit about him, but sadly it seems the done thing when someone passes away to say how great they were, so thanks for that. Doesn't take much to get in the current England side, though
