The Gallery nightclub have applied for a license to open from 10.00 till 03.00 everyday. This will not be good news for Maidstone town centre should it be granted. 10 in the morning or 10 at night? In the morning, the evening would have been 22.00, my God I'm turning into Pedant.

Being open all day is not exactly a "night club" is it?

Being open all day is not exactly a "night club" is it? One has to wonder what plans they have for the daytime. Will they be pumping dance music out loud all day, local residents wont like that.

Loder and Paynes only closed so quickly (it was due to stay open up until Xmas of 1996) but closed at the end of September, as the was an interest in turning it into a "super pub", jumping on the bandwagon that muggleton had started in the town the previous year and bar Coast ( now bar6 ) had continued by moving into the old barclays Bank building. The plan was to have the pub up and running by Xmas 1996,hence the fast closure of loder and Paynes, but the council decided that there was enough bars and clubs in bank Street so it fell through and the building remained empty over 2 years until it reopened as another shop, Lakelands, for a few months until they moved into bluewater

I never bought anything in there, but I often used to go in just to go upstairs! Hard to believe the council ever refused planning permission because Maidstone had too many pubs and bars!

Yes, i worked on the balcony section with the furniture and the beds. The mid 1990s saw the emergence of binge drinking and the start of the super pub culture, plus parking and driving restrictions and pedestrianised town centres, that ultimately forced people out to the large out of town retail parks, that ironically led to the closure of town centre stores and bars and clubs taking over the empty properties anyway!

Old House at Home (Enterprise Inns?) being taken over and refurbished by Craft Union, then run by current licensees. CU pay 18% of turnover to whoever runs it. They took over the Queen Charlotte in Rochester and did it up nicely, but remains very much a working man's pub. Sold Stonegate and Timothy Taylor Landlord on my last visit. www.craftunionpubs.comSame group own the Station House in Tonbridge, lovely decor and beers cheap if not cheaper than Wetherspoons.

I am really surprised that nothing has ever been done with the old post office building in King Street, it Has been standing there empty for over a decade now, as well as the old army and navy building. Okay I know about 10% of that building was used as a morrisons express market thing for a while, but didn't last long
