This story gets rejigged by the KM every couple of years. I'm pretty sure if I could be bothered to look back through this thread I'd find a link I posted to an almost identical story a year or more ago. My parent's house in Loose Road was similarly purchased by the council 30 years ago in order to widen the road. Since then absolutely nothing has happened and the old house remains untouched. Expecting similar from this story - but at least the (soon to be ex-) landlord will have a nice retirement fund!

Wasn't the Fisherman's Arms a Shepherd Neame pub that went independent? My one glimmer of hope is you wouldn't get many flats out of the Swan. I have it from a totally unreliable source that the Swan is being redeveloped. RIP another decent pub.

I haven't seen any mention of "The First and Last" on Bower Lane. Anyone been there? Thought?

The first and last is one of Maidstones few success stories and is a great little boozer. It's very friendly with a good stock of beers including several Timothy Taylor's beers on hand pump. Definitely worth a visit but be aware of opening times especially during the week.

I lived for years only a hundred yards from the Wheatsheaf and used it a bit but not a regular! We had my dads wake in the pub I hadn’t been there for 20 years plus, I entered the pub and bought a round sever by Rossa, I said to him if bet you don’t remember me?’ Rossa said ‘of course I do how are you Tim I’m sorry about your loss’ Top landlord!

Sad that yet another pub has gone. It occurred to me on my walk home from the ground yesterday that I now pass 4 ex-pubs - in a 10 minute walk. Somewhat weird that the only pub (sort of) on that route that's still open is the Hare and Hounds...
But amidst all this gloom and doom, we had a really nice pre-match drink at the Flowerpot - what a lovely pub that is, almost perfect (excluding the 'drunk trap' steps outside the gents!). Finishing my drink and looking at the rain pouring down outside at 2:40, I was seriously tempted to order another pint instead.
