They shut the two end stands to save money. www.kentonline.co.uk/medway/sport/spot-the-fan-115454/How about this for a tinpot competition? Only 284 turned up at the Hawthorns for the Checkatrade Trophy tie between West Brom and Gillingham. Wonder how many were Gills fans.

I admire (and pity) any lower league fan who makes a long gruelling journey to watch their side in a Mickey Mouse cup against opposition who don't take it seriously. Isn't that the very essence of the obsessives who follow non league teams? Can't be bothered to Google what the Checkatrade Trophy used to be called.

Fans are boycotting it because the FA changed the format to an initial group stage, and (probably more to the point) invited Premiership and Championship academies to participate. What I find amazing is that even two turned up to watch Gillingham against WBA under 23s in a game where both teams had already failed to qualify. The other innovation in this competition is the introduction of penalty shootouts on the group stage. Both teams still get a point for the draw, but the team winning the shootout gets a bonus point, thus Chelsea under 21s got two points for their 1-1 draw with Oxford United because they won the shootout 13-12. I read somewhere that the 284 attendance also included press and scouts so the real attendance was probably somewhere between 200-250.

Tinpot? It's not even up to Mickey Mouse standard - relegate to Donald Duck immediately!

Looks like some very active stewarding of Brackley fans just before their second goal in that highlights clip.

Brackley are turning out to be a bit of a bogey side for The Gills.
