The hatred ( if that's the right word ) of Gillingham is very much a one way thing. My father in law is a season ticket holder over there and he reckons the mainly wish us well. At the risk of provoking another diatribe from certain people, I will say that I can't understand the bitter rivalry with a club we have only played competitively a handful of times. I believe it emanated from the aggression shown by a number of Gills' fans in our home F A Cup match in 1980. Bryan Reed knows!

It's perfectly normal to have a fierce rivalry with local clubs, so I don't know why people would worry about it. When we played them in the football league, segregation was waived, proving that rivalries don't have to spill over into violence.
Tonbridge and Gillingham will always be our big rivals whether we are above, below or at the same level they play - that's how football works. Regional bragging rights have always been a big part of the fun.
Yes, Gillingham have a contingent of supporters who are wan**rs, and so do Tonbridge, but then we have a few as well sadly, as demonstrated in the cup game the other night. You can't hate a club just because of that but we can hope to beat them whenever possible to prove we're the best in this area.

Tonbridge I understand. After all we've only had a couple of seasons recently when we've been in different divisions, and even then we could still get them in the cup. But to me, a rivalry with someone you aren't in competition with is just a waste of time. In well over 100 years history of our combined incarnations I believe we have played Gillingham competitively 11 times, and from what people say, the fierce (and I suspect one-way) rivalry is based on a single incident that happened 30 odd years ago. I'm sorry but to me that smacks of wanting to play with the big boys, and is frankly embarrassing.

Most the Gillingham fans at work are interested and friendly about our plight, particularly recently. A couple even went to the pub to watch the Stevenage replay. The only one who makes childish remarks is the company idiot, so no surprise there. I would love to see the Gills in the PL (I know, I know), as it would increase the footballing infrastructure and credibility throughout the whole county.

I'd like to see all of Medway burn. Well except Rochester as I quite like it there.

I have had Gillingham fans approach me when I am wearing a Stones shirt telling me how they are willing us to get back up there so we play them again and they can have proper rivals (and that even happened in the County League days!). I can also recall their fans getting in our end in the league game in 1989. I'm not sure why anyone would believe the rivalry is based on a single incident. It is quite simple. They are a few miles up the road and we want to beat them because of it. Watching their fans celebrations when they won 1-0 at Watling Street in 1990 would have told you it was not a one-way rivalry.

No more than people who disagree with you become ego driven and narcissistic I'm not reopening that discussion. Suffice to say I object to being branded thick by someone who can't even spell their profanities correctly.
