It's on until 6/12 and is part of the larger Stones History project that Plastic Passion admires so greatly.
The official site has a piece on it - including this para:
"The material lent by the National Football Museum includes: Subbuteo table football game. Subbuteo was invented by Peter Adolf and first produced in Langton Green, near Tunbridge Wells."
And that is related to Maidstone United how, exactly?

The tendering process for that exhibition was a joke. At least one talented, experienced journalist who is a long time passionate supporter of the club applied to do it and was not selected. Instead they went for some fancy art Johnny with no clue about the club. I suppose I should go and see the exhibition before I get too judgemental but the presence of Subbuteo doesn't fill me with confidence.

Looking at the photo used, I'd probably be better off going into my attic if I want to look at Maidstone memorabilia.

Exhibition contains the claim that there is a plaque marking where the centre spot used to be at London Road. Isn't there a disused retail unit marking this spot?

That's the first I've heard of that. If there is, as you say it must be incorporated into one of the stores.

The retail warehouse thingies pretty much cover the old pitch, so, if it exists, it must be set in the floor of one of them. But I've never seen it.
It is a common way of marking where an old football ground was though. There was a piece on the BBC news site the other day about ex-grounds, and they all had a marker for the centre spot or one of the penalty spots, etc.
In some cases, where houses had been built on the old site, some had been bought by fans as well, so they could live where the old pitch had been. Much as I was sad to see the old ground go (and am reminded of it almost every day, as my kids are at the school opposite) I wouldn't want to live on it!
