If it was a fuse (as seems likely), it should at least be unlikely to happen to us now we've switched to LED lights, as they draw much less power (as low as 10% of old school lights).
Another thought - electricity is generated in three phases, so domestic customers literally get only a third (one phase) of the power available. Typically different parts of a neighbourhood will use different phases, which is why in some local power cuts, some of your neighbours will still have power.
Large users of electricity (eg factories) will use all three phases - partly because they need more power, but also because combining the phases in different combinations gives different voltages.
So... I wondered if users like us, where a single phase cut could be really serious (game postponed - lots of income lost, etc), could have multiple phases supplied, even if we only use one, and then we could switch to a working phase if needed.
I don't have the knowledge to answer this - maybe there's a proper electrician reading this??
